I hear from multiple people that if you fill out a form 4 with the boys in blue, they then have the right to come INTO your house at any time without a warrant to look at your Form 4 item and other guns.

Can anyone give some proof of this or is just an urban legend?

Urban legend. You have to keep the form 4 with the item. Nobody can just come in though and start looking around your house. You can be asked to see the item and the forms if out shooting and run into law enforcement that is not up to date on NFA items.

+1 on it being an Urban legend.

Only thing close to truth to this urban legend is in CA and it does not involve the BATFE.
CA requires a person to get Dangerous Weapons Permit before they can get a NFA firearm (DD, MG, SBR and SBS).
[AOW, C&R SBR and C&R SBS are exempt from the Dangerous Weapons Permit requirement.]
Once issued the Dangerous Weapons Permit requires an annual fee, registration of the NFA firearm, registration of the locations the NFA firearm is being stored, registration of the vehicles used to transport the NFA firearm and allows yearly compliance inspection audits by the CA DOJ BOF.
