Just curious how closely the Feds are looking at these forms. Can someone walk in to a store. Purchase a rifle or pistol and lie on the 4473 and walk out with a new gun. Does the FFL do the required checks or does he just get paperwork. In Alabama we don't have a waiting period.

The "Feds" don't see the 4473 unless the dealer has a compliance inspection or if a gun is recovered and a trace is run.

Sure, you can lie. But it's a Federal crime to do so. Remember, the dealer will run an FBI NICS background check before transferring the firearm. If you clear that you'll get the gun, but if they ever discover that you lied on the 4473 you'll never own a gun again.

After the customer completes and signs the 4473 the dealer will run the FBI background check. In some states those that hold an approved firearms permit may be exempt from the FBI NICS check.

And the firearms permit must be renewed every 5 years to be exempt from the NICS check.
The renewal period is just one factor in whether a firearm permit meets the requirements to serve as an exemption to the Brady Law.

You're asking the wrong question

You SHOULD be asking, "Does anyone know a good lawyer?"

Like it our not, when you fill out a form and put your name at the bottom, it shouldn't matter how closely anyone might check. You've just sworn that your statements are true.

Federal laws aside, just how much weight do you attach to your word? How much do you want others to attach to your word?

Lying on the 4473 is a violation of 18 USC 922(a)(6). It is punishable by up to ten years in federal prison and/or a fine (plus a lifetime loss of gun rights).

Someone might be able to get away with it, but that's another question. And some folks have not gotten away with it and have been convicted of that or associated crimes.

In any case, responsible gun owners abide by the law.

There's nothing further to discuss.
