Foster Slug Range?

I use foster's in my 20 ga Mossberg 500 for deer hunting in the brush. It has a cut-down 18" barrel and clip-on rifle sights, and honestly 50 yards is the absolute limit that I can hit a 10" plate 100% of the time. But, I have killed a few with it and can say that they were put down with authority. After reading this thread I can't help but wonder if a slug barrel with good rifle sights wouldn't be a better option than what I have, or even a scope mount. To be fair though, I tend to use the 30-30 more than the slug gun now that we don't do drives anymore and it seems to work just as good.

We always figured if we could shoot a 7" group at 100yds, we had a great shooter.
Dad made the longest shot with his model 67 savage, 119 paces.
We always hunted the thick stuff, so that shots wouldn't be over 75 yds.
My son has some hand loads that will hit an 8" gong at 100. 18" smooth bore.

Part of the problem with smoothbore shotgun accuracy has nothing to do with the barrel, or the slugs. Its the sights. Most that I have seen are best suited for 50yd shooting. At 100yds they will cover the target, and the target stand.

Yep. At 100 yards you have to get mighty fine with the Kentucky Windage. Not something I'd want to have to do under extreme stress.

Off a bench I could hit a 1/4 scale silhouette at 100 yards with a bead sight. It required a fair bit of hold over. I’d hold at the shoulders and hit about the 8 or 9 ring. If you are dedicated to just slugs you may try a rifled choke. I’ve seen pretty good improvement in accuracy with just a tiny bit of spin on a fosters slug. I think they’re like 1 turn in 36 inches.
