My neighbor's kids found a huge amount of mil. surplus ammo in an appt. that the tenent "vacated". Also were a bunch of tapco green followers and new s/s springs, ar magazines as well as ak mags. Also they found cleaning equipment and a sight adjuster tool.

Both kids have a 30-30 so I gave them each a box as they have no rifles for the rounds they found.

The youngest boy has an iver johnson model 55 target that was missfiring badly. I got my screwdrivers and took the grips off and low and behold was a strain screw. I screwed her down all the way and backed off some to make it easier for him to shoot d/a. I loaded her up with cb longs, took her out front and all 8 rounds fired.

That's what I call a good day.

By the way the 7.62x51 headstamp is RG 85. 85 being the year. Anyone know who made this ammo and if it's any good. It's also got the nato stamp too. I can't make out the headstamp on the 5.56, but it's nice and clean.

RG would be Radway Green, some good Brit ammo. Wonderful stuff in my L1A1. Say, I have a 20 year old brick of Bearcat .22 long rifle ammo I would be willing to trade you for all that foreign ammo!:D:neener:

DougW, Thanks for the offer, but I have a fn browning bar in .308, a remington 742 carbine in .308 and a browning 81 blr in .308. The only 5.56 I have is a ruger ranch which is ok in accuracy for the first 2 shots. Once the bbl. heats up, it spreads out pretty quickly. Too bad they didn't find some .303 British as I can't afford much factory ammo. I just started loading for the .303 and I've got my fingers crossed.

Shouldn't you contact the tenant and see if he wants his stuff rather than just sell it off? Maybe he forgot it somehow.

From my experience in real estate it is common practice that you get to keep (for better or worse, which could mean you have to dispose it of it depending on what it is) anything that is left behind after the premises have been vacated, be it an apt, storage unit, personal home, etc... It is actually the law IIRC that you get to keep it, at least in the states I have lived in...

I doubt it was simply "forgotten"...

Lone Gunman, Normally I would try and make contact with the owner, but this guy skipped out and owed my neighbor about 3 months back rent. The place was trashed and there were cases and cases of empty liquor bottles that he left behind. I'm thinking he needs to change his life for the better.

I had a similiar find this month with Mil-Surp 7.62x51.

The shop owner is liquidating, so, how much and what did I get?

2 lead sealed cases of S.A. (one was mistakenly  marked 5.56 but contained the nine 140 round .308 Battlepacks).
COST? $480.00

600 rounds of Hirtenberger (Three sealed battlepacks)
COST? $112.50

1600 rounds of Port (8 bp's, five being in the sealed wooden case).
COST? $312.50

I can't brag about any of this as I was almost Ammo bankrupt prior to this. This is a definite blessing from my Lord; I was able to sell part of it at market rates in order to fund my "Pre-08 election purchases..." Thank you God.

I was going to say "what if this guy comes back?" but from the sound of it, he had a lot of issues in his life, and some ammo and mags is the least of his worries. May have been high or drunk and doesn't even remember leaving it there. :barf:

Nice score! :D

I doubt that this will be the end of the story. He'll be back for that stockpile.

It wasn't quite so lucky, but it reminds me of a yard sale I went to years ago. I was actually looking at a fly rod hanging in the garage, when I spotted some ammo cans under a workbench on the other side. "Are those for sale?" I asked. "It's a bunch of my son's old ammo", said the homeowner. Turns out he was long estranged from his son and was afraid that the ammo was no good and was also afraid to sell it - said he had more cans in his basement. Long story short - I wound up with 2,520 rounds of Malaysian 5.56mm and 15 Colt AR Mags, (10 30's and 5 20's) and he flat out refused to take more than $100.00 - said he was glad to get it out of his house... :)

Correction.

Let MassMark choose your lottery numbers

LOL...That, and the 2900 round haul of 1969 Lake City and 1970 Remington M-80 linked ball I found this time last year at .24 cents a round is as lucky as I've ever been in my life.....I'm lottery poor and ammo lucky... :D Now I'm scrambling to find more 7.62, (I've been bad)....Being obsessed with shooting an M1A is a dangerous hobby...but worth it... ;)

He should have paid you to take it!

Now THAT would have been something...But then there's that karma thing...I felt bad enough just writing him out a check for 100-buckeroos....Not that bad though.... ;)

You folks sure to do like to dream up stuff to worry about. Anybody who skips out on three months rent, after leaving an apartment trashed, ain't coming back for a few rounds of ammo.

You can bet your bottom dollar on that.

Good find.

You might want to check the laws in your state, and ask a lawyer if you have any questions. Here in Kentucky property abandoned by a tenant goes to the building owner if he manages it himself. However, in the case of an owner who has his property under management, the property management agreement may determine who has rights and responsibility for the abandoned property. It would be prudent to resolve any ownership issue before shooting or selling any ammo.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but (351 winchester) you said the only 5.56 you had was a ruger ranch rifle. Ranch rifles in 5.56 are very rare so you will want to double check the chambering in your rifle before using any of that ammo. I understand that NATO 5.56 is not safe in a .223 Rem. chamber.
