Found a used Glock 17... should I?

Geez, like I can afford this... found a used Glock 17, the standard size 9mm, at a local pawn shop... comes with one 17 rd (!) mag, has nite sights... $485... is that a good price? It's been used for sure, some wear to the slide, but all in all, not in bad shape... can you "shoot out" a Glock?

I think you might be able to find a new one for a few dollars more if you shop around. I'd say no more than $500 is about right. Then there is the 17 rd mag, decisions, decisions.
 
That depends on a few things. First, if it's the original 17 round mag then it's an old Glock, the night sights might be on their last legs, so the sights might not be worth anything.

Also, what kind of frame is it? If it's the older frame with no finger grooves nor accessory rail, then it's not worth as much as the newer frame that has these features.

Another thing to wonder about on an older gun is if needs the Firing Pin System Upgrade. I have a certificate for my old Glock 17 that the upgrade was done. If that hasn't been done then you need to consider that as well.

I purchased my used upgraded Glock 17 with 5 preban mags for $575. So $485 doesn't sound like a great deal to me. Especially when you should be able to find a new one with 2 10 round mags for about the same price.

Graystar, it is the older frame; it has no box or papers, no way of knowing if there's been any firing pin work. I didn't know the sights gave out? Hmmm... I'm gonna have to think about this more... please don't stop with opinions/info, folks... thank you...

Buy a new one

Buy a new one "For a Few Dollars More". Sorry, couldn't resist the tribute to Clint.

Since it is old and worn, offer the guy $350 if you gotta have it and see if he bites. For $485 you are very close to a new gun with 2 10 rounders, without nites, both of which you can live with, add later, and have a brand new gun you can be sure nobody abused.

Used large capacity magazines for a Glock 17 are worth no more than $54 for NFML, and $65-$75 for used FML large capacity magazines.

Why? You can purchase used NFML 17-round G17 magazines fron online vendors for about $53 each. FML mags are available from private parties if you're patient and look carefully. I paid $75 for a like-new FML G17 magazine a few weeks ago.

Don't buy into the hype that large capacity Glock magazines are worth $100+. They are only worth that much if you're willing to let someone sucker you into paying that much! Hold out and demand lower prices - time is on your side. The AWB sunsets in 2004, and prices will only go down along the way. Just make sure you do buy a few prior to the ban expiration to hedge your bets in case they renew the ban...

Check the sights in a darkened (not completely dark; twilight is fine) room. If the glow is barely noticable, they might as well be standard fixed sights. If they have usable glow, it might only last another year or so. If he won't or can't tell you how old the sights are, they aren't worth more than $25 to me.

New Meprolight nightsights are available for $75.

If the gun is an older style frame as you report, I'd say it's worth maybe $285 by itself - go to a bookstore, find a gun value book, and check. Add in $50 for the mag ($65 if FML), and $25 for the sights.

It's your money, but more than $375 would seem like a waste of money to me.
 
To me, used night sights are a non issue. They might be worth keeping, you might have to have them replaced right away. To me, the issue is the 17 round mag. If I couldn't get hi caps for a fullsize 9 mm pistol, they're not really worth getting. Going price for a used Glock in my area is from $375 -$450 depending on condition & accessories in the deal. Also, what generation is the pistol? $485 isn't a great deal, it might just be 'fair'

Just go to Tamara's house and take one of hers. She's got so many guns now, she wouldn't even notice it missing.

Southern Outdoor Adventures in Albany, GA, has a FG&R G17 (used) with three 10-rd. mags and a Bianci Accu-Mold holster for $400. Per Beren, you can get pre-bans from Ivanhoe's for $53, which includes shipping. Even though Ivanhoe's advertises the mags as NFML, several have posted on GT that they received FML's instead.
 
I have several Glocks. I'd pass on this one. Here is why. Cops can buy a new Glock 17 with no night sights for $400 here in Portland. You can buy them in local gunshops for about $50-75 more. You can get a used Glock rebuild in the gunshops for about $450. For the asking price of $485.00 you are getting a non-rebuild with old sights (look on the right side of the sights if they are Trijicon's there will be the date of manufacture. They have a 12 year guarantee and if they go out you can get them replaced but more important is the front sight because if it is pinned it is going to be more expensive to replace because the slide is not milled for installation) If they are old Meolights then they are crap. If the high capacity magazine is the drop free design then its probably worth about $50-75.00 thats what you can buy them for at the gunshow. If they are non-drop free then they are worth less. Those are less desirable but work just fine. They will not drop free when loaded but when you have fired your gun to lock-back they will drop free. I would have no problems with this type of Glock manufactured magazine. If the high capacity mag is not manufactured by Glock it is worth nothing. If you can live with 10 rounders you can buy them anywhere at a price from $17-25 dollars each.
 
The deal around here seems to be that if you see a used glock with a price tag or $485, they'll take around $400 for it. You should try to talk them down a bit, but only if you can pay cash.

Sound authoritative, all right, but happens to be patently incorrect. All Glock slides are cut the same way, whether the front sight is staked (pinned?) in or installed with a screw. Granted, the staked-in front night sights aren't quite as easy to remove as the staked-in plastic sights, but after the sight is removed, the new sight is easily affixed, no milling required.
 
Nero - You probably are right. My Glocks are 2nd generation and I was told that they changed the way the front sight is affixed to the slide with the 3rd generation Glock. I assumed the slide was cut for a dove tail. Bad me.
 
New G17 and G19s in my area are going for $519. I would buy a new one myself, and over time, customize it the way I wanted it.
 
sorry for the late reaction, but at the time this topic was new I was too busy to respond :(

6 months ago I bought a brand new Glock 17 3rd generation with even the whole new locking block pin above the trigger guard.

since I'm from Belgium, we don't have that ridiculous "federal ban on high capacity magazines", so 17-round mags are standard. they go at $15 to $20 new.

my Glock came with 2 of those mags, and altough guns in Belgium are generally overprized, mine came for $565.

so you could say that $485 for a used 2nd generation is a real ripp-of :fire: like pico suggested: offer the guy $350, and if he refuses, than the heck with him :neener: there are enough gun shops and people offering the same guns at 2/3's of the price!

also the Glock 3rd gen looks way better than the 2nd gen, and you have a better grip and a rail (which you will probably never use, bit it still looks cool :cool: ).
