Thinking about finally jumping for a Glock; now, which? 17 or 21?

Opinions, please. I'm a 1911 man. I've been feeling the lure of the "Dark Side" for a little while now. I like both .45 and 9mm, and I do better with full size guns than compacts. If a man was going to jump into a Glock, which should be the first jump? The classic 9mm 17, or the .45 21?

Since you're already a 45 acp kinda guy & you'll be limited to 10 round mags regardless of which one you buy...get the 21 ;)

Oh, and I do have a friend that bought a handful of the 17 rd mags right before the ban; I can probably get one from him.

If TN is not one of those "No pre-ban unless you bought them before the ban" States, don't think magazines are the biggest issue. G-17 pre-bans are not too bad right now under $60 many places. G-21 mags higher but only give you 3 more rounds...

My standard 9mm/45 reccomendation is Bucks-up type or a reloader go for the 45, if not get the 9mm. Guns no fun unless you can afford to shoot it.

As you apparently already have "THE" 45 (1911), I'd get (argueably)THE 9mm, the G-17.

JMHO

If you get the 20, you can get 3 guns in 1! You can fire .357SIG, 40S&W, and 10mm all from the same frame! All you need are the uppers.

But if you really had to choose between the 21 and the 17, I'd take both. :D

I own two Glocks: the 21 and the 19. Bought the 19 over the 17 strictly for concealment reasons, but I really, really love it.

That being said, I am as big a fan of the Glock 21 as you are likely to find. It's just an extension of my arm. Gotta find the photo from the IDPA match I shot at Blackwater a few years ago. A buddy of mine snapped a pic of me shooting three targets twice each, and he caught the slide back on the sixth shot with five other pieces of brass still hanging in the air. :D

That gun is my favorite (by a comfortable margin) of my dozen or so pieces. And thanks to someone from TFL pointing me to Comp-Tac, I've even found a holster that will allow me to CCW it.

I have two Glock 19s and one Glock 21. I think the Big Dog is a good gun and would urge you to get that one instead of the G17. The G17 is a good gun also, but a bit too big IMHO for a 9mm. If you want a 9mm, get a G19.

Presuming your 1911 has a 3-4lbs trigger, and having come from 1911's into Glocks myself, I would highly recommend the G34 (9mm) or G35 (.40). I can't seem to shoot my 1911's as well as my G34. The G35 will afford you "Major" for USPSA. I can find no reason to get a Glock .45. If I want to shoot .45, I shoot my 1911's. And at nearly half the cost of .45acp, 9mm is pretty appealing if you shoot alot. If you like the size and power of the 1911, I'd highly recommend checking into a G23 ... they don't feel any more "compact" IMHO than a 1911.

Good luck.

Of the choises, I'd say the one that fits your hand the best.
Like Deuce, I prefer the G34/G35 frame.

I just bought a 21

I'm usally a 1911 shooter, but I decided that I should open my collection up to other firearm designs. Well, first up was Glock. Since I have .45 acp launcher in the 1911's, I figured I'd just stick with the cartridge I shoot the best. I'd heard the .45 Glocks were the most accurate models, and I went to my local store to see if I could actually hold one of these guns in my hand. The 21 felt like it barely fit, and the smaller framed Glocks fit me a lot better, but I wanted the .45.
So last weekend, at the gun show, I pick up a factory refurbished G21 without finger grooves, and three mags. I took the gun home, dry fired it a bit over the weekend. On monday, I took the gun to the range and I guess I had gotten used to the Glock trigger, as I was clover-leafing some groups at seven yards, and getting some 2-3" groups at 10 and 15.
The 21 doesn't feel quite so big as it did before. It's all up to your hand to decide which one feels the best. If you can shoot the cartridge it's chambered for well, then I say you've found the model you want. I'm stuck on the big dawg, myself.

I had a glock Model 27 and just loved it, cept for the way "I" shot it. Ran like a Cadillac, but accuracy was a problem.

I'm much happier with my "Glock substitute", a Steyr M40. Now I can hit the target at 50' at 1" on up to 3" and I was killing clays last Sunday at 80 yards. I just could not be whole without a plastic Black "evil" autoloader.

This Steyr will now be the main gun for me, as I always hear people say "you got to practice with one gun, one gun, blah, blah blah." I shoot .45ACP, 38 wheelgun, magnum and 9m Makarov.

There's nothing wrong with a good Glock though. Just not for me.

The Steyr is worth taking a look at. It's a Glock on Steroids. Serious.
