Found a used Glock 17... should I?

I believe there is or was a website called topglock.com that if you sent the serial number they would give you the "birthdate" of the gun.

FWIW, the local gunshop had a second-generation G17 in excellent condition for $450 with ten-round mags and standard sights. Maybe too high a price, but I prefer second-generation over current Glock frames, so I was thinking seriously about getting it. However, I thought too long--went back yesterday and somebody else had already bought it. Bummer.
