I just purchased a used (but relatively new) Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .270 Win from a local gun store for $449. It's walnut, blued steel, and only has one dent in the stock. No other blemishes.

Did I do well, or did I pay too much?

I think you did fine considering new ones go for atleast 600. Did rings come with it?

Hi. MSRP is $843. $449 isn't bad scoped or not.
The dent will come out by steaming it. Regular clothes iron set on 'cotton' and a wet, but not dripping, wash cloth. Put the wash cloth on the dent and apply the iron until the cloth dries. Usually less than 30 seconds. You will need to put some kind of finish on after.

I personally love ruger rifles. I have a hawkeye myself and I love it. However, I have heard a couple horror stories from guys about the new hawkey and am worried that someone got rid of a .270 so soon after it came out in the hawkeye. Hopefully it shoots well for you.

It shoots fine. Groups with Remington Core Lokt 130 grain averaged around 1.25" at 100 yards. My smallest group was 0.7".

I put nearly three boxes of ammo through it today. I went out with it around noon today, then again this evening with my Kimber 84M in .308.

Let me tell ya. The Ruger is nice, but it ain't no Kimber!!!

if its a 3200 3-9x40, then if you havnt already done so, get the lowest combo of factory rings ruger has, the scope will clear by 1 or 2 millimeters, and will make you cheek weld much better,
thats how my m77 270 is set up, and i love it
