"We have now seen another horrible tragedy that will never be forgotten. It is long overdue for us to take some common-sense actions to prevent tragedies like this from continuing to occur."
OK, the Brady Campaign has made its statement; where is the NRA or VCDL? We need a statement for our side.

abcnews DOT go DOT com poll:

There are at least 29 confirmed dead in the shooting at Virginia Tech University, making it the worst campus shooting in American history.

Do you think this incident is a reason to pass stricter gun control legislation?

No. Violent shootings are isolated incidents and it's irresponsible
to link them to gun control. --------------------------- 4,072
Yes. This shows the violence that can occur when someone has
access to handguns. --------------------------------- 1,991
I'm not sure. I need more information. ---------------- 163

Not a scientific survey.

Question is, how are y'all in the 'free states' gonna handle the New Jersey/California style anti gun legislation that may come down from the fed .gov in the aftermath of this?
The same way I'd react to a repeal of the 13th Amendment.

Bring it on...

I am very, outrageously angry at having to choose which I fear more...the law, or the criminals.

The only place I don't carry is school.

That pretty much says it all. When government is feared more than miscreants are feared, we're pretty much screwed.

Express your condolences, then focus your angst and start writing letters, emails, missives describing gun free victim zones, Israel's policy, whatever you can think of for protecting the innocent from predators by the Law-Abiding few who actually care and are in position to do some good.

I agree with all of you that had a student been armed this would have been cut short. But lets face facts there is no way that in our present social climate this will trigger anything but a government attempt at complete gun confiscation and/or much more strict licensing...as for ccw, we can probably kiss that goodbye as well.

I just applied for my CCW today... went out minutes after all this news and picked up, filled out, and turned in the application

NRA-ILA:

Statement From the National Rifle Association
Monday, April 16, 2007
The National Rifle Association joins the entire country in expressing our deepest condolences to the families of Virginia Tech University and everyone else affected by this horrible tragedy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.

We will not have further comment until all the facts are known

VCDL:
As most of you know VCDL has been pushing hard to change Virginia law
to allow college and university students with concealed handgun
permits to be able to carry a gun on campus for self-defense.

Last year Delegate Todd Gilbert put in such a bill for us and so did
Delegate Mark Cole this year.

We could not get the bills out of subcommittee.

We warned the General Assembly that violent crime can, and does,
happen on campuses across the Commonwealth.

But the university and college lobbyists swore that crime was not an
issue and that the schools did not want students and visitors to be
able to defend themselves with a gun or other weapon. They argued
that the schools had little boxes with lights that had a button
someone could press if they needed the police.

The General Assembly turned a deaf ear to allowing college and
university students to be able to protect themselves and here we are
today :-(

While it is NOT illegal for a college or university student with a
CHP to carry in Virginia, they could get expelled (or fired if a
teacher). And that is a severe enough financial penalty that students
don't want to take the chance. Who can blame them?

But, I'll bet a few are reconsidering their position now. Expelled
by 1 or carried by 6?

VCDL will make it a high priority again next year to get a bill
introduced that will let students and faculty carry.

I don't want to hear from universities and colleges any more about
crime not happening on campuses, or the police will save you if there
is a problem, or that we need more gun control on campuses.

ENOUGH OF ELITIST BALONEY FROM COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES!

If just ONE of those victims had been armed, this most probably would
have turned out very differently:

It is gun control that gave birth to this. One or two armed students would have ended the nightmare much sooner.

I so dread the gun-haters sickening exploitation of this tragedy.

The NRA had damn well better be prepared.

So much like Columbine.........guy is inside slaughtering unarmed students/staff while the cops are hunkered down behind their cars and other cover. Guess those gunshots from inside the building were really scary.

Well I am one of those that carry regardless of any stupid sign. It's concealed for a reason. I'd rather have it & pay the $200 fine if I ever need to defend myself or someone else.

Bush will be speaking in a couple minutes regarding this incident.

*shudder*

You just know he's going to sell all us gun owners out to get a "time table free" Iraq funding bill to his desk.

we are so screwed

God bless the President! His words were few, but his words were wise, and conveyed support and calm. It was what his words should be...support.

"It is difficult to comprehend senseless violence on this scale," said Virginia's Governor Timothy M. Kaine in a statement. "Our prayers are with the families and friends of these victims, and members of the extended Virginia Tech community."

The first priority should be extending sympathy to the survivors and the kin of the victims. Let Paul Helmke (President of the Brady Campaign) and
Josh Sugarmann (Violence Policy Center Executive Director) do their dance.

At least NRA and Helmke opened their statements by expressing sympathy or condolences. Unlike Sugarmann or Helmke, NRA made no political statement, which I find graceful.

Actually, it was a non-event.

I imagine legislators have been briefed by their staff that it is not a good idea to say anything about legislation on the same day as the event.

Otherwise, Pelosi would be all over this.

Just wait until the morning news programs in the morning to see the speeches begin.

Sean Hannity

Sean Hannity, just said on the air: "Well, it was a gun free zone, and many CCW holders have faced serious consequences for bringing legal guns to schools"

I hate to be political on this so soon, but like many other here said, we need to stand strong and state clearly what we think!

Looks like Sean Hannity is on out side!

If the reports are correct that the firearms used are a 9mm and a .22LR then this really isn't an incident that lends itself well to gun legislation. Two types of firearms that are broadly and popularly owned and not particularly powerful or unusual.

Just beware: carrying where you aren't "supposed" to is often considered a felony--and a death caused during the commission of a felony automatically becomes murder. So these no-carry laws can mean the difference between a good shoot and a murder charge.

They do seem to making a big deal out of the fact the 9mm had a standard capacity 15 round magazine.
