France bans citizen journalists from reporting violence

You'd think the press would be all over this, but not one peep. Seems that our American Media is in total lock-step and will not criticize Europe.

This law applies only to "happy slapping?"

To me, it seems like a convenient way to limit access to negative information about France.

Kinda like how some cities fudge crime statistics to make the city appear safer than it really is, so that the city remains an attractive place for people to move to.

Mainstream media are anything but comfortable with the notion of "amateur," citizen journalists stealing their monopoly on "expertise." They've long considered the "news" to be their private hunting preserve.

In the case of happy slapping, making a law to punish the video guy is not necessarily a bad thing. As far as I am concerned, the video guy is as guilty of a crime as the guy doing the beating.

In France a journalist has to be licensed by the Government. Here we call that a "benign" tyranny. They don't "get" the First Amendment over there.

You'll notice they don't have talk radio in Europe either...

No first Amendment in France? What part of France did you visit and when? They have talk shows, they have vigorous press. Just listen to the 8:00 news over there. It is 45 minutes of solid news, not the 21 minutes of news you get on the major networks over here.

You can say whatever you want about France, but do not say people do not have the right to speak and the means to make themselves heard.

Well, maybe they used to.

It looks like that's changed.

Just go there and spend a month. You probably will run into a couple of strikes and few mass demonstration to protest whatever issues are hot at the time.

Some people don't get it! It is already illegal to be an accomplice and participate in such a thing. This law is not about that, that is just the ruse used to pass censoship on recorded violence. They do not have to enforce it all the time, but if it effects them politically they can at thier descretion under this law.

How do you say 'slippery slope' in French??

This should be, but probably won't be, a wake up call for our jounalists who while enjoying the protections of the 1st Amendment are working so hard to do away with the 2nd.

Not at all, you will notice that this law added a clause that makes journalists and professional media exempt and seperate from the law, just like our gun laws exempt police and law enforcement. That exemption effectively silences strong opposition from them.

These exemptions and having some people seperate under the law were banned in our constitution. They refered to them as titles of nobility. A title of Nobility in many parts of Europe granted individuals rights above and beyond those of the normal serf. Everyone being equal required such titles of nobility not be allowed. However we now violate the constition be granting titles of nobility to police and other agents, and others in government, to excercise rights others are not suitable to excercise. They are essentialy being "knighted" to fight for the society entitling them to additional rights through thier title of nobility.

I guess France is not the bastion of liberty our liberals think it is.
Ever seen "EURO TRIP"? We need to send buses of drunken Brit rugby fans through the tunnel to France on those double decker buses from England, I think France needs to be happy slapped.
France however is a large country so it will take at least 3 or 4 busses...
