I was browsing the shelves of my favorite LGS the other day and encountered a Freedom Arms in .454 Casull. Wow. The fit and finish on that model was exceptional. Does anyone own a Freedom Arms revolver, or has anyone had the chance to shoot one? I'm not planning to buy one, I'm just curious.

Very high quality, I think they are likely the finest handgun (or at least revolver) made in the US now.

Nice to get a .454 with a .45acp spare cylinder so you can plink with the cheaply when you like but have the option to take anything in North America with the .454 loaded up in it.

I feel like I'm being baited.
Yes, the fit & finish on Freedom Arms revolvers is exceptional. They are works of art that go "bang".
I'm lucky enough to own two. A field grade model 83 in 454 Casull & a premiere grade 353, which is 357 magnum.
Both fantastically accurate. As I've grown older, keeping the recoil of the 454 under control has become "interesting". It is still a hoot to shoot.
If I ever win the lotto, I'd get a big-ol-safe & fill it with Freedom Arms revolvers of every configuration & caliber.

These are old pics I've posted in the past. I guess I really need to break out the camera and take some new ones.

As you see from the posts it's an excellent revolver. I have never seen a used one in a local gun store for sale. I'm wondering, what is the barrel length and what are they asking for it?

A Freedom Arms revolver is what I hope to own one day but I don't want to buy new and never see them used.

I heard a while back that freedom arms revolvers were not allowed in some competitions due to their inherent accuracy. That says a lot.

Had mine since 1989. Freedom Arms partnered with Dick Casull to release the .454 Casull round specifically with the Freedom Arms revolver for it, and I wanted a bigger gun than my 44 magnum for an Alaskan hunt.

I have one, a model 83 Premier Grade in .454 Casull. It is easily one of the finest firearms I've ever shot or owned. I did send it back for an over travel stop to be installed, and a spare cylinder made for it in .45ACP. Turn around was quick, and the work is excellent. This revolver can drive tacks with either cylinder. The .45ACP cylinder makes practice cheap and pleasant, plus you can hot rod .45ACP brass up to .460 Rowland levels of power in the thick cylinder walls and fully supported chambers.

Tuckerdog, who did the porting on your .357?

Jski,

I'm the 3rd owner ( if you count the dealer that got it from the original owner ).
It is just as I bought it, scope, jeweled trigger & hammer, ported & unseen, the trigger job. I contacted Freedom Arms for any known history. They told me the original owner sent the gun back to them, and they did all the work.

It's rare to see a used one. Mine, pictured above is the "Field Grade" which sold for about $800 in 1989. I think the Premier grade sold for around $1200 back then. I saw one last winter at a gun show, like mine, used, for $1600. I kind of get the impression that even finding a used one will not be cheap.

I had one for awhile. I will agree the quality in general is exceptional however I didn't like the sights. The front one stuck up too much and I thought was a bit too skinny and fragile for me and the rear sight started coming loose too many times so I sold it along with the expensive holster I had bought for it.

I don't know, I think I would have just changed the sights instead of selling the revolver.

I'm not certain because I didn't handle it, but I think it had a 6" barrel.

The tag was somewhere slightly north of $1800, which is the reason that I didn't handle it. I have the patience to save for something like that over the course of a year or two, but I need a .454 Casull like I need another hole in my head.

Very nice bear, sir. That's a heck of a round with which to hunt.

Alfons yes they are. There is really no comparison to the blackhawk, nothing fancy just pure american quality and workmanship. If you ever get a chance to shoot one you will understand. I let a 454 slip away a couple years ago and regret it to this day.

I own 5 or so. My scoped 22lr will shoot under an inch at 100, five shot. I am not the only one to do it. ( http://www.sixgun-forums.com/sixguns/content/24-freedom-arms-model-83 )

is it the best gun and most accurate made gun in the world? probably not. It more accurate than I will ever be and build as strong as heck. I am a fan. ymmv

Alfon, hunting inside of 50 yards, I would say no. Maybe even greater distances too. Whatever u can shoot well, use that!

I feel the same way judge. I have a standard 40x and a 40x sporter. They were my go-to for 1" or under at 100. After I got this pistol, I look at my rifles less favorably. The one issue I have is that I am running an EER pistol scope on the FA. the crosshairs are thick for 100yrds, hence the big pink dot with the crosshatch.
