hey yall, long time reader first time poster. And ive got a question. A new friend of mine has expressed interest in upgrading his home defense pistol from his current bump in the night gun (jennings 22 hand me down) to somthing a bit more reliable, potent, safe etc. But ive noticed that he's a lefty. heres my problem, ive never really looked into lefty friendly semi-autos the only things i can find on the internet that advertise themselves as lefty friendly are in the higher price ranges, and i cant just tell him that the first handgun he buys should be a $1200 hk. any input would be welcomed.

Well, I can't answer about all semi's, but I've used Glocks and Springfield XD's with zero problem. XD's have an ambi mag release, but I hit the mag release button on all my pistols with my left index finger anyway. Slide releases don't affect me much, because I slingshot the slide closed.

Most of the polymer framed pistols are pretty friendly to the lefties. Glock, S&W M&P, Ruger SR9, FNHP, XD, etc.

The Ruger P-series has ambidextrous mag releases & decocker/safeties. You could probably find a P-95 around 300 dollars.

I am left handed.

The Springfield XDs, Glocks, and Rugers are all very lefty-friendly.

Single action semiautos like 1911s and Browning High Powers are also lefty-friendly, if they have an ambidextrous safety.

SIGs work well but to use the decocker you have to shift your grip. Not a big deal, IMO.

And of course, wheelguns work just fine for southpaws.

just took My buddy to the gun shop, doesnt like glocks, i guess he doesnt like the angle, but he did fall in love with the 1911's there. he did look at wheelguns but the prices at the store were much higher than they should be, and shop owners should know better than to say that a new gun cant be had for under 800... if thats the case, how did i get most of mine. same guy also told my that 380 cant kill a man.
anyone know a reasonably priced 1911 that has the ambi-saftey ?

didnt think of the fn line, gonna have to find a place where he can put his hands on one, and id like to tahnk yall for the help, keep it coming

Glocks are lefty friendly? Must be right handers saying this.

Mag release is on the wrong side and is an irritating square shape. Slide release is on the wrong side.

Not the best choice by far.

Mag release is on the wrong side...

As I posted earlier, I use my left index finger. I shoot in competition, and have zero problems with mag changes. In fact, I'm usually reloaded before the "northpaws" on the line.

Slide release is on the wrong side.

Also stated earlier: slingshot the slide. Many instructors teach that anyway.

question on that, if you can slingshot it closed faster than someone using the slide release, why do people waste time with the slide release

I thought my fellow southpaws had more imagination and adaptability.

The square magazine release doesn't affect my fingers, and the slide stop is easily reachable with a minimum of adjustment to the master grip, for one-handed operation. A little sandpaper on the magazine release's corners, if too sharp and intrusive, helps muchly.

And if you have both hands working, uhm... tilt sideways, push support hand thumb down onto said latch, if you're not actually going to slingshot it.

Trying to be more helpful... The Walther P5 is the only left-ejecting pistol I know of.
I have one and like it. Check here for photos...

Since you have the pistol centered in your line of vision, what does angle of ejection mean at all in regards to "left or right" friendly.

This always confused me. I've never fired a pistol where the direction of the brass was any manner of distraction.

Then again, I consider mirror 1911's utter jokes and wastes of time, save for their locked and cocked switch being on the proper side.

Shooting with one hand. Pistols that eject brass around 4 or 5 o'clock can come close to bopping lefties if they're shooting with their strong hand only and their body parallel to the target. Not something terribly common, but I've seen it happen. Its more of a concern for rifles, though.

"...heres my problem..." Not your problem. Tell your buddy to lose the junker and learn to use both hands. He was issued two hands for a reason.
Left hand only pistols are few and far between. On the other hand, there are lots of parts that can make a pistol work from either side. Mind you, nothing beats total familiarity with a particular pistol. That makes the issue go away. Doesn't sound like your buddy is that far along though.
Then again, like Nowhere Man says, a revolver fixes it. A 4" .357 that fits his hand will do nicely. He has to learn how to shoot it and practice though.
"...slingshot the slide..." What?

"Slingshot" refers to grabbing the slide, pulling it back to release the slide lock and letting go. Some teach the "slingshot" method over using a finger to push down on the slide stop lever.

Let me chime in again......Being a lefty, the only gun I found unfreindly is a 1911 without an ambi safety. I know, there's others, like BHP's and some Ruger and S&W's. What I'm trying to say is, as a leftie myself, I learned young to adapt to a right hand world.

I shoot Glocks. I shoot 1911's. I shoot Berettas. I shoot Rugers.....ect. All with the confidence of knowing I can figure out how to handle it left handed.

+1. Quoted for truth.

There are plenty of guns w/ ambidextrous mag release. Walthers & HK's have the trigger guard mounted release.

M&P's (and several of it's contemporaries) have the option to easily switch the mag release to either side.

well, he finally made his choice. hes going with an xd. darn, was kinda hoping to convert him to the church of the 1911
