Spot77, I think your suggestion regarding building relationships with politicians outside of gun issues is probably right on target (no pun intended). I have to admit that I never contacted a politician until I got involved in the gun issue. It's not that I don't care about anything else, but I guess I never realized the potential that a citizen has to influence legislation. Unlike your district (31), I'm stuck with two anti-gunners, Busch and Clagett. I think McMillian will support CCW and Astle in the Senate is a hunter (not that that helps with CCW). If I go to the capital on Thursday, I'll try to get the guts to walk into Clagett's office and talk to her. I don't know about the Speaker. That might be a lost cause.

Regarding Phil Lee's comment, I would think young fresh faces would be a good thing.

When he said:
"Where were you when we were fighting Cas Taylor? Home sucking your thumb?"

I would have responded by saying:
"Where will you be in 20 years when we still have to fight for our rights? Dead?"

If the new faces are pushed out, who will fight for future generations?

Being over 40 myself, I think that's a bit brutal, GWAG. That said, while I did show up for the AWB hearings last year, I didn't get truly motivated until Maryland Shall Issue (marylandshallissue.org) started up late last year. I don't think CCW will go anywhere this year, but I'm proud to be on the ground floor of the eventual restoration of the right to self-defense that Marylanders will enjoy someday.

Greg, 40'ish plus 20 = 60'ish, and I hope you plan on being around long after that!

I'm lucky enough ( ) to have serious neighborhood issues in my area which keeps me in contact with a lot of people from the county council and up. There's sure to be something outside of guns that gets under your skin enough to open a dialogue with your reps. It sure makes it easier to talk to them when they know who you are, and that you're serious enough about your concerns to contact them on multiple issues.

Heck, if possible, I'd like to eventually be able to call my reps "friends". Fortunately I like them enough to do so; whether they feel the same about me remains to be seen. :uhoh:

Greg, Astle SHOULD be on our side (He's Norton's Senator too, so there's TWO people to pressure him) and I think Busch might just be a hair more open minded about it than previously thought. Claggett I know nothing about, except that she's not been a gun owners' friend in the past.

The BIG fight is still going to be slots this year. Regardless of how you feel about slots, it might be beneficial to cozy up to their opinion on slots; agree with them, and then say something like, "You know, it's great that we agree on this! I'll bet we feel the same about the Citizens' Defense Act too!"

You can lead a horse to water , but you can't make him drink. Unless he's thirsty.

Phil is an interesting, opinionated character. He sometimes comes across a little harsher than he intends. He usually attends the MCSM meetings www.mcsm.org for directions and meeting agenda. The next meeting is tomorrow (2/9) at 7:00. If anyone here would like to show up I'm sure he would engage you in a lively debate. Whether you agree with him or not, and I certainly don't always agree with him, he puts more time and effort into RKBA in MD than anyone else I know. Keep in mind that gaining gun rights in MD is like swimming in peanut butter. I'm not defending his remarks re the young gun owners, but the Cas Taylor defeat that he orchestrated was quite a coup. He has a wealth of knowledge in many areas.

Having said that I fully support the MSI effort, but don't have any great hope that it will pass a law. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Spot 77: Did I miss something?

No, it is just me wishing it was one day closer to the weekend! I meant Thursday night, Town Meeting (Bonanhan, District 29B) at the Library. Sorry for the confusion.

One of the factors in this equation is Monkey County CE, Dougie Duncan or Balmer's Mayor Marty O'Malley are going to run against Erhlich for the Governor's office.

...and the REAL queation is, which one is MORE anti gun - Duncan or O'Malley

My money is on Duncan.

Unless people believe the media attack that's already happened and is sure to continue, I think Ehrlich will ge re-relected.

RE: Duncan VS O'Malley

O'Malley may not be our friend, but Duncan is as rabid an anti-gunner that has been ever born. He is an active part of the Montgomery/PG/JHU/Ceasefire/Gail Gunn cadre and would do every thing in his power to strip us of our rights.

The best thing that could happen for us would be that O'Malley wins the Democratic primary and goes against Ehrlich. Ehrlich would be beat O'Malley with one hand behind his back.......not sure about how he'd do against Duncan

Well I thnk Phil and I have agreed that we don't see eye to eye, but that the bigger picture is more important. So don't take my rantings too far out of context - it's not the character, it's disagreeing opinions.

Also, a recent quote from him turns the tide against previous statements:

The RKBA effort needs young people with your dedication

Things as a whole, have gone well in Annapolis. More work to do - Having a meeting late Sunday afternoon/early evening.

If anybody is interested in becoming a Regional Coordinator (which would handle 7 legislative districts) or a District Coordinator for the ccw cause, let me know.

MikeK - you're right - if we never try, we'll never get it. POst details of the MCSM meeting if there's anything valuble to report.

Monsternav: Can you get some face to face time with Bonanhan? Any chance of influencing the vote?

Duncan has the "liberal bedwetter" from Monkey County liability for the rest of the state.

My take on the CCW viability is that the powers that be dislike boat rockers. Back in '00, the NRA basically told the MD TRT to stand down from MMM protesting for the MC gunshow issue.

We ignored them.

The HOP was told to leave Cas Taylor alone by the NRA.
That head was piked by a dozen motivated people.

35 is GREAT, and we have many commited to voting for it.

We'll need a lot of people at ALL of the hearings this year.

Plan to make as many as you can, or else we'll and up with an AWB, AND no ccw still.
