I have been reading Boston's Gun bible 2002 revised edition and I was very interested when I came across a part in the text that claims battle rifle front sight diamater is equal to a certain MOA and can thus be used as a range finder. He said the M14 NM front sight is 8MOA (.062"), however, I am curious as to what the standard M14 sights diamater is and what MOA that would turn out to be?
The formula for finding out an objects range on the battlefield is
(Size of Object in Inches) x 100
------------------------------------ = Range in Yards
Size of Object in MOAs
The formula for MOA width of front sight is,
21600
------------------------------------ = MOA
(sight radius" x 2pi) /front sight width
So calculating the MOA for the M14 NM front sight is as follows;
21600
-------------------------------- = 7.9679MOA
(26.75" x 6.28318)/0.062
Now if someone can tell me the diamater of he M14 standard front sight I can know the MOA of it and then use my M14 as a range finder!!!
(20" torso) x 100
---------------------- = 250 yrds
8MOA
