I have a few rifles that I use for target shooting. Some are equipped with a Lyman globe-style Front Sight that affords a few insert options. These options are various front sight post or circle inserts. With my aging eyes, I struggle with my focus on the post, and the circle just doesn't provide adequate accuracy.

I have seen some front sights with an aperture and cross hair for AR's, M1A, & Garand. An example: http://www.knsprecisioninc.com/Gun Sights.htm

Has anyone here ever modified a Lyman type insert with cross hair wires ?

Most target shooters I know use front apertures. If you are not getting good accuracy out of them, you are probably using too small a ring. There should be a good deal of white between the ring and the bullseye.

Shooting glasses ground to focus on the front sight will help, too.

But to answer your original question, the easy way is to buy a card of inserts including a crosswire:
