The front entry to the Military Gun Supply on East Loop 820 stands torn open after a car was used to smash it open early Tuesday. Hundreds of weapons may have been stolen.
Police and federal agents are investigating whether a burned sport utility vehicle containing what might be charred guns was involved in the break-in early Tuesday of a business in east Fort Worth that specializes in surplus military firearms.
The break-in occurred at Military Gun Supply at 3815 East Loop 820. An alarm was sounded at the business at 2:35 a.m., said Lt. Dean Sullivan, Fort Worth Police spokesman.
When officers arrived they found the front of the store smashed inward, probably the result of a vehicle driving into the front of the store, he said. Store employees have reported several weapons were taken, including "possible assault-type, high-powered rifles," Sullivan said.
A burned Chevrolet Suburban was found about two hours later in the 4200 block of Carey Road, about eight blocks south of the store, Sullivan said. He said the SUV contained what appeared to be weapons, but since they had been burned, police and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agents are checking to see if they match those taken from the store.
Carl Walker, ATF resident agent in charge, said that store employees were making an inventory of missing items to help complete the investigation.
"I'm concerned with any gun, whether it be a .22 or some fancy assault rifle, if it ends up in the hands of people who want to do violent crime," Walker said. "We intend to work as quickly and efficiently as possible to get these things recovered."
A man who appeared to be a store employee said that “some firearms” were stolen, but he declined to say how many.
“It was a smash and grab,” he said. “We are cooperating with authorities.”
The man declined to say anything more.
Evidence of the burglary was evident at the front of the business at East Loop 820 and Berry Street, north of the Tandy Leather Company.
One of four large decorative rocks in front of the store appeared to have been shoved into the window, which shattered, leaving broken glass on the sidewalk.
Security bars were pushed inward and the front door was askew.
The business carries surplus military weapons and other firearms, according to its Web site.
Check back for details.
