Perhaps were lucky to grow old and die in bed, amongst friends and family.

And in the end .......EVERYTHING else is getting chewed on while still quite alive.

I am personally not afraid of Death, as none of us gets away from it....but Im very leery about the pain it takes to get dead.

On a side note, when wolves have an old or wounded caribou for a lunch, I let them fill up before getting on their trail, it slows them down quite a bit.
They say wolves take out their own and kill strange Wolves, often, and the only other way they die, other than accidents, is Men hunting/trapping them. I have never come across an old Wolf, compared to Dogs Ive seen that have lived past 10 years old...Just sayin'....

Thank you Caribou. I am sure that poster is clueless about subsistence living and the reasons for harvesting in most painless and efficient way and why it is better than "sport" hunting. How many think shooting deer at a feeder or in a field is sporting. And wounding animals.

When I was very young we like a large portion of Americans lived on a small subsistence farm. We grew our own animals like sheep, cattle , pigs, chickens, geese, turkeys, and more. We had a large garden, fruit trees, and wild berries on our farm. And most farms were much like ours. We did hunt and fish but deer and much game was very scarce due to poor game laws. This is the early 1950's.
Since then small farms disappeared and people were moved into towns and cities and became cheap labor. Now I forgot my point.

The point I got from your post is that people used to know where their food came from and what it took to stay fed. We’ve lost that for the most part in most of the USA.

Yep....that's how I understand it. Without man to hunt them, it's themselves and available food that controls their population. It's said, that when food is scarce, the breeding females in the pack will not even come into heat, so as not to get bred, have pups and reduce the amount of food available for the rest of the pack. Average lifespan of a wolf in the wild is 6-8 years, but in captivity, it's comparable to a domestic dog, up to 17 years.
