Future step-kids and guns in the house

From my experience, in the age range your oldest is moving into, the greatest danger lies not in your children but their friends and their friends acquaintances. No mater how safe and well trained yours are you never know what "Darwin Candidates" their friends can be.

I have 2 children ages 11 and 16. We have had guns in the house all of their lives. Both are well trained and safe around firearms. I have even gotten unsolicited compliments from strangers at public ranges on their behavior and demeanor.

That said, all of my guns and ammo are locked up. Most are in a large, quality RSC with my 2 loaded EDC pistols in a fast access safe with simplex lock that is bolted to my night stand. The kids don't know the combinations.

You cant hide a gun from kids they will find everything sooner or later. That includes the key to the gun safe, for me it's combination locks only.
