Anybody watch this show? Last night they were demo'ing Dragon Skin Body Armour, and the "Former Navy Seal" host was shooting 7.62X39, .223 and 9MM at the thing showing how even the "big stuff" wouldn't penetrate this body armor. What bugged me the most is that the tone of his voice whenever he said "even the big 9MM didn't penetrate" seemed to imply that if any of the three rounds should have penetrated, the 9MM should have been the one. Ok, it's a "bigger" bullet, but anybody who knows firearms, knows.... Well, I guess I'm preaching to the choir. But C'MON, a "Former Navy Seal" expecting 9mm to penetrate what .223 and 7.62 couldn't?

I AM impressed that the vest stopped the rifle calibres, but the 9? Gimme a break! Who writes for these shows! :banghead: :banghead:

If the 9mm was shot through a GLOCK, it would have pentrated. I think they should do these tests over!

i see your point...

most 5.56x45 has 3,000+ FPS
while 9x19P has what? maybe 1,000?

Bullet type/gr. might make a difference

especiall if the vest encounters armor peircing ammo... then maybe. but its good to have a vest that can stop an assault rifle round.

A lot of that show is cheerleading for the companies producing the product. I assume that they used the 9mm for repeat hits because the vest couldn't handle repeat hits to the same location with a rifle caliber.

I watch this show all the time. You know why? Because I actually enjoy watching it and thinking, yep, they're going to complain about this on THR because they don't have anything better to do.

One thing you have to realize is that he probably doesn't get to write his own copy. Very few of these types of TV shows are unscripted. Non of us have any idea how many times he may have gritted his teeth and soldiered on in the face of a script writer and director saying, "yeah, but it doesn't make good TV or really matter."

The host just kind of annoys me.

"When you need firepower, you need ULTIMATE FIREPOWER."

And the editing is annoying too. Like when he was loading the Marines' multishot 40mm with what are obviously practice rounds, and then the camera switches to downrange and you can see all the massive explosions. For some reason paint rounds don't do that out of our M79.

Cool video of stuff, but the ULTIMATE TACTICALITY sets my teeth on edge.

Dragon skin is a really good product, but I too would doubt that it could take very many hits from AP 7.62mm NATO or other full-power rifle cartridges.

The part that bugged me about that episode was his insinuation that the 7.62x39mm is substantially more powerful than the 5.56x45mm.

As for their silly grenade test, what's the point of saving the torso if the head, arms and legs will be blown off???

I watch it regularly they have some interesting stuff from time to time, but the dialogue is kind of cheesie and there is lots of inaccurate stuff. My question is would you survive the blunt trauma from the rifle round and if you did how big would the bruse be? Who wants to try it?

I like the the 6-shot grenade launcher!

I like the the 6-shot grenade launcher! It looked like a combined AR-15 and S&W mega-revolver.

I agree that this program as does Myth Busters leaves room for improvement. But, consider where they are based. Right in the Heart of the "Beast". I'm happy that there are so many firearms-friendly programs out there.

Even the Hunting channels are showing the impacts again...finally. Yeah, I'll take what they offer, short of perfection, but entertaining all the same.

Let's get some of that armor into the hands and on the bodies of our men and women in the M.E....yesterday!

Edited to add some links:

Here are two links to it. The first link is the “Splash page":

The second link is Mack holding “The Weapon"!:

To me, this looks like an AR-15 / revolver.

I almost like that show, but the navy seal guy is so overdramatic about everything and they try to portray him as such a badass that I can't deal with it. It's so corny.

its gotta be somethin with Discovery channel. both MythBusters and Future Weapons have potential to be great shows. of course both have their flaws when it comes to the information they put out. and another thing the shows have in common; their hosts. those 2 on mythbusters, man i cannot STAND them. same thing with FW. the guy just gets on my nerves. maybe if they picked better hosts of the shows, id like them better.

For those of you who have ideas for Discovery

I work for Discovery, so send your ideas, complaints, suggestions to me in email at [email protected] and I will forward them to the producers.

One note though, Discovery does not produce much (90 percent) of what you see on the channels. They purchase programming from the production houses already produced. For instance, Trading Spaces was produced by Banyan, for TLC, etc.

I think that guy might be a "former navy seal" (applied and denied) he seems to make quite a few odd screw ups that anyone who knows guns whouldnt make.

Just a little thing about the Dragonskin, wouldn't it make a lot of sense to test it against 7.62x54mm AP rounds as that is pretty much the highest small arms caliber currently being used against our troops?
