Hey guys,
I've been looking at FALs recently and I like the style of one with the G1 type setup. What are the pros and cons of building one on a type two DSA receiver as opposed to just buying and shooting a standard imbel FAL?

Back in the days when prices made class III not so prohibitive, I had a NIB G1 FAL, Belgian made. It was a nice rifle, well finished, and accurate enough. However, to my experience, it was not as good as the G3 I also owned. Not as accurate, harder to clean, heavier, longer, and the metal fore end would positively blister your hand after a mag dump or two.

I hope your experience is better than mine was.

:)

Internally the G3 is pretty much like an MP5, right? If so, I can't envision it being easier to clean than a FAL.

Complete agreement on the metal handguards. StG-58s with those metal grips get positively nasty with heavy fire. I kind of wonder if that was not somehow deliberate, to discourage troops from heavy fire (as pioneered on the StG-44) or something.
