Hey all! Well, I've been doing my homework on the Heckler & Koch G3 rifle, and it's current use as a Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) in the German military. In my studies, I've come across multiple pictures of what appear to be the standard slimline G3 handguard fitted with various rails/accessories on the bottom. I shall post some pictures now of what I'm talking about:

As you can see, these Germans have somehow found a way. I am making this thread, because I too... must find a way. My PTR-91 GI needs a vertical foregrip. It must happen. It will happen. But, I need your help! Does anyone out there know how I can do this? What materials do I need? What tools? This would just be so, so awesome to have. It would provide a lot of versatility for me as I don't plan on using anything more than a vertical grip or possible bipod, and would prefer to use what I have instead of buying a quad rail etc, plus IMHO it just looks totally awesome!!

So does anyone out there in computer land know how to do this? Have you done it yourself? There must be a way, because as you can see it's most certainly been done more than once. I'd like to know specifically what hardware I'll need, and what type rail to buy. Thanks so much guys, have a great day! :)

You could fit one of the aluminum fore ends purpose built to accept rails?

The rail on the topmost photo seems to be cantilevered, having been mounted at the rear of the slim hand guard. Perhaps a suitable length of rail drilled with two or more holes at one end, with corresponding drilled and countersunk holes thru the trunnion end of the hand guard, and two or three machine screws and nuts would put the assembly together?

Neat thing is, you can get a couple hand guards to experiment with as they are not to dear.

PTR railed forend?

I went the other way and put an HK (93) wide on mine so I could use the factory bipod...but the OEM handguard is pretty nice.

think that guys girlfriend is named Stefanie?

sorry - im no help on the G3 issue
That's okay, the Stefanie issue is just as compelling.

Yes, the gun will be tipping the scales but it doesn't bother me. I plan to have the rail installed on the bottom, with a vertical grip, and also a detachable light for home defense. I'm going to install an HK 3 point sling too. I also want to get a claw mount for optics and will be adding a red dot sight. I'd also love to have a buttstock-mounted magazine pouch that holds one magazine.

When all is said and done, it will probably be at least a 15 lb rifle, but that should help negate recoil!

On of the reasons why I want to put a rail on the gun is that the handguard gets HOT! HOT! HOT! when shooting. With a vertical foregrip, it should really... cool things down.

Amazed that a military unit would allow a member to wear a patch with the name of a significant other and pretty red hearts on it.

OP - do you have that optics mount shown in (most of the) the pics? Looks like it leaves room for using the irons in a pinch. Looks pretty cool actually

Well guys, I just said "forget it" and ordered one of the wide HK G3 handguards, the kind where you can put a bipod on it. The wide handguards look cooler, feel better, and handle heat way better than the slim handguards. I can't wait to get it installed!!

Big Shark, I don't have one of those HK claw scope mounts. Yes you can see the irons through it, and the mount and optic can be removed with a throw of a lever and when reinstalled return to zero. I might get one of those too!

Had an HK91 had both the slim and wide forearms for it.

Sorry but I think that bipod looks like crap, can't stand that they can't take the time to design it with the springs on the inside. It just looks like something some hack pieced together in his garage.

Then the grip, all I can say is that's the last thing I would spend my time putting on my HK91. It's fugly and how do you use either, they look like they crowd each other. I wouldn't do it to a good forearm, if it turns out you don't like it, your stuck with it.
