Hello all,
So, I've been hankering to invest in a Glock .45 of one variety or another. Not neccesarily walking away from my G19 once and for all, but after trying out a friend's G21 and seeing how comfy it was to shoot, I'd like to add one to my stable. It's purpose would definately be CC, so I'm thinking to forgo the G21 in favor of a 30 or 36. Weighing the pros and cons in my head,

G30:
+Higher Capacity
+Able to accept G21 mags as reloads
+Would feel ok with one extra mag
-Heavier
-Thicker
-Will need all new leather

G36:
+Lighter
+Slimmer
+Fits my 27,000,000 G19 holsters
-Low capacity
-No high-cap reloads
-Would feel like I'd need to carry two reloads
-Maybe has questionable reliability according to some reports?

The G21 fit my hand just fine, so I'm not concerned about the G30 being "too thick" for me as some report it to be, although I've held (but not shot) the G36 and it felt pretty sweet in my hand. I dunno what to do. Part of me says "average SD shooting only involves 3 rounds fired, yada yada", and part of me says I'd sure feel alot better with 11 rounds on tap instead of 7, but at the same time, the not having to buy a bunch of extra holsters is a major incentive as well.

Any thoughts? Thanks everybody.

My vote would be for the G30, larger mag. capicity and as far as the holster problem (I feel for you, I also have a lot more holsters than I need) but I would look at which G19 holster I liked best than see if they sell it for the G30.

I personally prefer the G30 over the G36 for function and capacity. The G30 SL provides a smaller grip while maintaining the attributes of the G30.

I prefer my G36 for several reasons. First, it is light and really easy to carry. Being a Glock it is almost indestructable. I have not had any function problems when using round nose (ball) or hollow point ammo. It eats Blazer ammo like candy. My 1911's won't. Get the +0 mag extensions and it feels a lot better in the hand when you shoot it. It still holds more ammo than most revolvers (think about it). It holds as much ammo as an Officers model 1911. It isn't effected by rain, salt, crud, water, sweat, or any of the other things that might cause other guns to hang up. The G36 is a hand full if you shoot +P Cor-bon ammo. If you want a G30, why not get a G23? More to hold on to and it will fit your G19 stuff to. My wife thought it was cute, so she bought me a G36 back when they first came out. It is my "go anywhere, do anything" pistol where I might scratch one of my fancy 1911's.

Though I have not shot it I would imagine the G36 is easier to control because of the better grip I can get on the slimmer grip. Its thinner profile is better for concealment depending on your carry style.

Glock G36 Double Stack?

I recently acquired a G36 "slimline". I am suprised how fat the magazine is for a single stack. So much extra space on the sides. It appears that somebody could make a double stack after-market magazine that would fit in this pistol. Has anybody seen such a thing? Also, in my ignorance I must ask, do any of the other double stack mags from other Glock 45 ACPs fit in the G36?

I've had my G36 since shortly after the first came out. Ignore any blogs you read about reliability. Mine is 100% with the correct loads. Mine doesn't like flat nosed or big hollow point bullets. Other than that, it shoots great. It has a relatively short feed ramp so some bullet profiles are a problem, but that is easy to rectify. It is slimmer and lighter than the G30. It holds just as much ammo as the 1911 compacts that a lot of people carry. You get 6+1 which is more than the revolvers that a lot of police carried for years. If I need more than 7 rounds of .45ACP, something is terribly wrong. Practice helps a bunch.

I'd get a G30 - 10+1 in a (sub)compact frame, really soft shooting, takes the G21 mags, and as reliable as your 19.

Personally I would strongly recommend the standard G30, as there have been massive reports of the 30SF having problems returning to battery and some mysterious wear on the trigger bar.

Here's a GlockTalk thread about the problem, going on 31 pages now!

I own both.

I've had a G36 for years and recently got a G30SF (my third G30).

Both have their uses.

The G30 is a holster gun that provides maximum fire power, with G21 mags, and the G36 is "pocketable", at least for me.

I carry both (not at once) depending on the situation I anticipate being in.

Glock 36

I have the G36 with a crimson trace guide rod. Once I really learned how to shoot and practice by joining the IDPA, I know now that it was a waste of money to get the laser. Anyway, I have small hands and for me the G36 fits VERY nice. It carries extremely well and is light enough to not notice. I have not had any problems with this pistol and I shoot a lot. I even produce my own reloads and the G36 fires them well too. The very best recommendation I give to anyone thinking is to see if your local gun range has both to rent and try it for yourself side by side. Then you will be able to make an intelligent purchase. Like test driving a car before you buy it. Research, test and purchase. Hope this helps

I own both as well. I put my 36 slide on my 30sf frame and I have a higher capacity .45 that will fit all my other glock holsters (well at least all my non .45 or 10mm ones).

I bought the 36 first, and quickly wanted something with more capacity.

Old thread alert

Since this thread was started in Nov. 2008 the original poster has likely made a decision already.
I've had both the Glocks 30 & 36, I prefer the 30. It's more concealable with the 9 round magazine and IMO has a "better" (subjective) grip than the 36 when using the 10 round mag. Kept the 30, sold the 36. I bought a Kahr PM45 in place of the Glock 36.

It holds as much ammo as an Officers model 1911

Just a point, not a big deal. My Colt CCO, New Agent, and Kimber Compact Custom all came with seven round mags for a 7 + 1 = capacity of eight rounds.

Well I for one am glad this thread resurfaced. I've been curiosly interested in the G-36. Especially now since people have said it will fit other Glock sized holsters...
Thanks guys!:)

Thank you for that clarification Mr. Self Appointed Moderator. Really appreciate your insight on the matter.

I've been promoted

My reply was 2 minutes after yours. It was not directed toward you. I type slow, when I began typing your post wasn't even there.

I'm not trying to be a moderator (although I would be good) ;), just pointing out that this thread is almost 6 months old. I would have made a decision on the matter a long time ago. "Mr. Self Appointed Moderator":barf: says keep on posting since other people may have the same question, desire the same comparison; that's why I responded initally, even though it's an old thread.

I might as well elaborate on my previous post: I'm a Glock fan, I have other models (not just the 30) that I like. The reason I did not like the 36 is my little finger would get pinched between the magazine base pad and the frame; I don't have that problem with any of the other models.
