I picked up an oddity at a shop a couple days ago. A 1947 dated M44 Mosin Nagant carbine with a PU scope and mount. When I asked to see it I was shocked to see it priced at only $150 as I figure the scope and mount alone must be worth at least that.

The scope is dated 1942 with a 1967 rebuild/inspection date. The mount appears to be original as well.

Of course, the Soviets never mounted scopes on the M44, so someone built this up sometime. I'm probably going to hunt for an ex-sniper M91/30 to mount the scope on eventually.

Here are some pics.

I've never seen that!
Awesome find nonetheless, both pieces seem to be in good condition.
I have to say I'm terribly jealous though. Why can't find wicked deals like that? :p

can you show us the other side, how it is mounted? you are right though, heck of a deal, usually what the scope alone goes for...

Eventually, maybe. Getting pics on-line is a PITA for me. Due to computer problems at home I have to the library to upload pics and that's just a hassle. I just happened to need to upload some pics of an Indy Jones jacket I'm selling so snapped a couple of the Mosin as well.

It uses the standard MN base and mount so if anyone else posts a pic of that side of a standard base/mount it looks the same.

Anyone else got a MN sniper handy to put up a pic?

I very much doubt it's original, but your instincts to buy were correct. Even a repro PU scope is worth that much, and it sounds like the scope may be an original even if it wasn't mounted on the M44. Here's a good artic on how to spot a fake. The screws used to secure it are often a give-away. Your mounting bracket looks way too new at least from the angle of the photo.

I have never heard of a genuine sniper carbine. Of course, anything is possible with Mosins. But I'm skeptical. Good buy regardless, though. And kinda cool!

Oh, I know this isn't an original "carbine sniper." The Soviets only used 91/30's for PU snipers, not M44's. While I don't have a pic that shows this, the woodworking on the stock is also too "fresh" to be original.

The rifle is a Century import and either Century built it up like this, one of the distributers built it up like this, or a previous owner put it together. It came out of consignment at a shop as part of a large collection. That's all I know.

I am confident the scope is original though. While there are new production scopes being made with WWII dates, the new production scopes are *only* marked with WWII dates. My scope also has a "1967" rebuild/inspection mark. As far as I can tell, no one is making new scopes with fake rebuild marks.

As far as the base and mount, I have no idea if they are original or not. I will say the picture makes the mount look "newer" then it looks in real life due to the flash reflection. Your guess is as good as mine though.

And now the important question: How She Do?

I can just see it now: "Comrades, FIX......bayonets! Ready......SNIPE!"

Don't know yet. I'm taking it to the range next week or so.

Yeah, I'm kinda wondering how it's sighted in with that folding bayo. I'm going to try it with the bayonet folded first. We'll see.
