So me and the SO were kicking around Gander Mountain today trying to spend the $25 gift card I got for Christmas (it was starting to stink up my wallet). Managed to buy a box of .270Win 130gr Remington Core Loc and a box of 2 3/4 12G 1oz Winchester Super X slugs.

Waiting at the gun counter to pay was the typical GM experience, to say wait and wait while the clerks ignor you. I mean here I am with ammo in hand at the counter and these guys are all talking to a bunch of window shoppers about how Kimbers are the best 1911's made and can shoot 1/4" groups at 200yrds. :barf:

So anyway she suggested we browse around and see what they had. Everything was typical GM +$100 on top of retail. Disgusted at the prices I almost missed it sitting in the used pistol case.

ColtSeries70.jpg

Colt Series 70 Matte Nickle with blued accents (made in 1980). It's has wear typical to these pistols where some one left it in a nightstand or under the seat of a car to bang up against stuff.

Like I said I almost left it sitting in the case. I was getting real peeved at the (lack of) service, prices, ect and really just wanted to spend the gift card and get home so I just glanced it over. Considering the price I thought it was a Colt slide on a Essex frame or something but the SO... she knew it was all Colt and had me look closer even after I tried to waive her off that it had to be some franken crapola 1911. At her insistance I looked thru the glass :scrutiny: and closely looked at the stamp behind the serial number. Sure enough it was all Colt... But I was pissed, no time for $379.00 Colts... Probally take the clown an hour to even talk to us  .... I finally paid for my ammo (got that dreaded GM gift card out of my wallet) and we on our way home. About half way home she asked me "Why didn't you ask to look at that Colt?"

Then it hit me. :banghead: :cuss: :banghead:

I JUST LEFT A $379.00 ALL ORGINAL SERIES 70 COLT AT FREAKING GANDER MOUNTAIN. :banghead: :cuss: :banghead:

I thought about it for a hot min and decided it deserved to be rescued from a life behind glass with morons fondling it all day. Thoughts of some one with a brain in his (or her) head strolling in and buying it flashed thru my brain (many times) as I drove back to the store.... But when we got there it was still behind the glass.... :D

I have say thanks to my SO. I needed another Colt like a hole in the head but she knows WE ALWAYS need another Colt espc a $379.00 Colt.

Range report tomorrow!!

+1 on what kingpin said....when my wife hears colts she thinks we are buying a pony. :)

and also nice job on the piece!

I recently went into a Gande Mountain, my first time ever. I was pleasantly surprised. The service was very friendly, even though they were busy. The price on ammo, and they were fully stocked, was comparable to Walmart.

The store was big, bright and clean and check out was a snap. It has definitely replaced Bass Pro as my go-to store.

I need to go back though and look at their "used" case.

Hey Rkless.......

I checked your location so apparently you were visiting the GM in North Little Rock, Arkansas.........if not, you were in it's clone!!

Congrats on a great buy. I've noticed that on guns like you describe......when you get them home and apply just a light coat of oil on the outside, it makes most look like a brand new gun!!

But I do have one question......do you not have a conscious?? That price had to be the layaway down payment.......you caught one of the clerks asleep (not an impossible task).

BTW, I have a 1960 vintage J C Higgins 16 gauge bolt action that I'll trade you even??

Very nice. I was in there last night (I go to fondle/look at guns every so often) and noticed they had a used 642 for sale (with box!). The price? A mere 649.00. Nevermind of course the fact that they had a BRAND NEW 442 for over a hundred dollars cheaper in the very next case.

Once I got to know the guys at my local Gander, I've had great experiences there. For example, during one of their super sales, I found a used SW 642 for $289. Can't shoot snubbies, but it ended up as part of a trade towards another Python at the gun show.

Another sale resulted in a brand new BHP Practical for $499. Again, that gun was used in a trade towards another HK P7.

Finally, when I was having trouble finding a Grade B/C P7 to have refinished in Hard Chrome, the manager computer searched the country and found me the perfect specimen and had it shipped to Orlando. (CDNN was all out at the time.)

So, I agree that normally their prices are well above retail, but the deals ARE there, you just have to look, be patient, develop a repoirte with the "guys", and get lucky now and then!

I hope it works better than mine did. I did learn a lot about the 1911 in the process if getting it to work.

What a deal ! I would have snapped that up in a second.
I'm sure that used 642 for $649 was the model with the CT grips but that's still $100 too high.

Congrats on the find!!! What a deal!! Same price I paid for my S&W Mdl. 59 Devel Fullhouse. Got the pictures on fotoshop but haven't figured out how to get them over to here yet.

Nice find!

Just a side note.. my local GM in Merrillville, IN has ammo prices that sicken me! They are charging $50 for the same WWB 100rd value pack (.40sw) that Walmart sells for $30. They sell gold dot JHPs for $30-$35 per 20rd box depending on the caliber/weight. That's just insane...I don't like shopping there. I prefer Sportsman's Warehouse over them. Never been to a Bass Pro or Cabelas.
