I have been thinking about rebarreling my CMP Garand to a .308

Do any of you know a good smith in Maryland that does this? If not, then a good smith that does great work with Garands?

Thanks!

jmurman,

Fulton Armory is in MD somewhere..... do a google..... but they are pricey and generally backed up for a time.

Send it to Clayton Smith @ West Texas Armory, Dean Dilabaugh @ DGR, or Ronnie Morris @ Match Service Works. All these guys have great reps for good work. I can personally vouch for Clayton and Ronnie. Both have installed .308 barrels and refinished an M1 for me.

Best regards,

Swampy thanks very much for your input.

I have a service grade Garand. What do you think it would take/cost to rebarrel and tune to make it a better shooter in .308? What can I expect from these guys?

I had my Garand rebuilt with a .308 barrel by Dean at DGR. He did an outstanding job and it's extremely accurate now. Some folks here have balked at his prices, but I just can't imagine anybody doing a better job on it. It's pretty much the perfect rifle since I got it back from him: accurate, beautiful and reliable.

IIRC, it took about 3 or 4 weeks, but I got a lot of work done on it.

He has his prices on his web page.

Both Clayton and Ronnie did superb work on my rifles... and the $$$ in both cases was a LOT less than what Fulton will charge you..... less than HALF what Fulton charges in some cases.

Ronnie built my Match Grade M1 with Wenig wood and a Douglas tube in the Spring of '02. Full job. Wood, barrel, sights, front end, finish, etc. Shoots like a laser.

This last Spring I had Clayton refinish all the metal on an old beater M1 and re-tube it with a Wilson. I wanted a .308 plinker. I've not settled on which of my stocks I'm going to put on this one yet... but it shoots so well with a couple that I've tried that I'm SERIOUSLY considering bedding it in a new Wenig set and doing a full Match upgrade on it to see if it'll rival my other Match Grade. I'm betting it'll do as well or better.

Get it touch with the Ronnie or Clayton for their current pricing.... Be warned... Fulton can't touch their prices or turnaround time.

Just my experiences...
