I am having trouble with my CMP Garand rear sight. When I turn the windage screw the elevation kicks in and starts to move the aperture up. I know things are most likely worn. But which parts need to replaced ? Trying to get it apart now. Not really that familiar with the internals YET. But will give it a shot. Well, got it apart. I suspect that the half pound of sand and grit from Utah Beach inside the cover may have something to do with the problem. After looking at it a little more I saw that it appears to bind and when the windage screw is turned the elevation screw is forced to turn. And this elevates the aperture. NOT sure how to fix it yet. If anyone has an idea please let me know.

Installing and setting up the rear sight can be tricky if you don't follow a set procedure that involves having the windage screw tight while you adjust the slotted nut on the other side to enough tension to allow both adjustments to work freely but with decided felt detents.

I can't type enough to try to lay it all out for you here, partly becuase for me it's more about habit and feel than it is a texted routine, but there are places where you can get it.

Clint McKee's little book on Garand assembly is easy to follow and available at Fulton Armory. and most any good Garand book will cover it.

Maybe this will be good enough to get you straight with it: http://www.cromwell-intl.com/garand/m1-garand-assembly/assembly.html
