Well, my greek rack grade HR M-1 came today from the CMP. The serial number is in the 5.5 million range, and the barrel is dated 8-54. Total time from when I dropped off my order to when the gun was recieved was 9 days. Top service from the CMP. It was $315.95 total, including shipping.

Overall, I'm completly blown away. The stock is a brown with a hit of red. There are a few small dents and one or two small gouges, but thats it, with a circle P cartouche on the grip. The parkerizing is a dark, almost black finish. The only area of very noticable wear is the gas cylinder- a lot of the finish has come off, and silver is shining through (anyone know of a good paint/finish to put on it?) I don't have a TE or MW gauge, so I can't tell how eroded they are- but the bore is bright, with all the rifling sharp. I was expecting a sewer pipe- perhaps I got lucky. Is this a typical rack grade? I'm going to shoot it first, and see how accurate it is, before I decide to send it off for a .308 rebarrel. Heck, .30-06 ammo isn't that much more expensive than .308, and I'd like to keep it original. Oh, and speaking of original: almost all the parts I've found the markings on are HRA, except for the handguard, which is marked PB (Pierto Beretta?)

I took it out of the box (sturdy box, and it came with a manual, sling, and a clip), worked the action some, took some pictures, then dissassembled, and cleaned out the cosmoline. There was a small amount on the internal parts, but not much. Reassembly is a little vague with the CMP provided manual, but I figured it out.

I would have been happy if this had been a $500 service grade- but it was a $300 rack grade! These M-1s won't last forever, so if you're considering one, go for it!

Oh, here's some pics:

By the way- I'd like to thank my wonderful mom. Without her, none of this would have been possible. She had to sign all the papers, right the checks (I forked out the cash for the actual gun, though), and shot the 50 rounds to qualify, in addition to driving me around to get all this stuff done.

congrats on your first one, you'll never regret it! you are right, the PB does stand for "Pierto Beretta". Looks like you got a good one, have fun!

Cool Natedog!

Good rifle AND a good mom ya' got there. Reminds me of when my Grandma bought me my first 1911.

First of all, welcome to the club!

The gas cylinder is stainless steel, so it won't parkerize. The military went through a couple of iterations trying to find something that would stick for a long time. For the better part of WWII, they were painting and baking them. There are a couple shops out there that will refinish gas cylinders; you'll need to look around. However, if it generally matches the character of the rifle, I'd be hesitant to mess with history. Also, replacement gas cylinders aren't toooo pricy.

Given the choice between buying ammo and refinishing/replacing the gas cylinder, I'd go with ammo.

Enjoy!
Ty
