No really.

Clippers, like scissors and work knifes should be sharp.

Shovels and hoes also should be, they cut. I was gardening and realized I was doing more whacking than cutting weeds. I trot the hoe into the shed where hubby was working and ask him where the files were so I could get the dull out.

Ten minutes later he's finished with the stone he used to get the last bur off. I now own the only hoe in my state that can cut paper.

If the zombies attack I can fend them off in the rose garden.

That sharp hoe will definately make weed control easier.
A sharp edge on a landscape spade cuts thru sod like it's butter.
Lawn looks better also when the mower blades are kept sharp.

Shovels have often been used as weapons in military usage, last ditch defense, no pun intended. Sounds great, will they hold the edge?

Any half-way decent spade should be made from good hardened and tempered steel. They should be tempered rather like a spring or a sword, for that matter. If it doesn't hold an edge (not a razor edge, but a functional coarse edge), it's a crap tool.

An improperly heat treated spade will bend its tip when prying out large stones. Notice how a good shovel is very springy in this service.

If you dig often in rooty soil, it can help to file a V-notch (sharpened, of course) in place of your spade's point. This can be placed straddling a root, and when you stomp, it will cut rather than slide off.

I keep mine sharp for practical reasons, they work better. In the car I keep a Special Forces shovel sharpened on all edges in case I have to "dig" my way out of something. Very low profile. And they really do a decent job as a jack of all trades tool. Although for actual digging I think the wife's glock shovel is more comfortable to use.

A Sharp Hoe IS truly to be appreciated............Until you wake up in Vegas, without your wallet and/or wedding ring that is  SORRY JUST could'nt resist......
Shop class 101 back to the basics Sharp tools cut clean, and dull is dangerous! Thank you for the reminder! :)

The angle for the edge of razors, knives, axes and even hoes are different, but all "sharp" for their purpose. If not kept sharp they will not perform as efficiently as they might.

Good for you for getting that garden implement properly sharp.

Garden Hoes are interesting implements.

Growing up, I had a wittle garden hoe, just my size.
I was a lot of help.

Maternal grandma was really really smart, and ...

One of my Mentors was sharpening his hoe, and showing me all about it again.
But...but his hoe was different than mine.

He had cut into his, a bottle opener. I wanted one too...as I helped and sometimes got to have a Coke, of my very own.

I come back home from helping and grandma knew exactly where I had been and whom with.

My wittle garden hoe tattle-taled on me.

Hoe handle end on ground, hoe blade is up. The "notch was on the back side, and positioned such, it was safe to remove a bottle cap ( it worked on beer too).

Tack-tickle, we don't need no stinkin' tack-tickle. I was raised on improvise, adapt, overcome, thinkin' out the box, and runnin' what you brung
-yours truly

ps. I get a big friggin' check up front and big time percentage royalties if someone puts "my" garden hoe idea on the market.
I inherited this stuff.

*grin*
