i want to know how a gas operated semi- auto rifle - shotgun works. i know that somehow, the gas pressure from the cartridge being fired opens the action, but i have no idea how it does that, also, in cleaning one of these, do you have to dismantle the gas operation system in these all the time? or do you just let it go until something doesn't work? is it even something a normal (non-gunsmith) can even get into to clean? is my 195?'s browning auto-5 one of these?:confused:

No, your Browning A-5 is not gas operated.

It is a long-recoil operated action.

Go here and download the owners manual and it will tell you all you need to know about cleaning it.

Pay heed to the proper positioning of the friction rings for heavy & light loads on page 12.

It is not necessary, or desirable to completely dissemble an A-5 action for cleaning.
In the event it does become necessary, you should probably take it to a gunsmith familiar with them.

Gas-operated firearms in general, bleed off pressure from the bore about half-way between the muzzle & chamber.

This gas pressure works on a piston, much like your cars engine, to drive an operating rod to the rear to operate the action.

In your long-recoil gun, the whole barrel and bolt recoil to the rear, then the barrel & bolt part company. The barrels flys foreward, then the bolt follows it and picks up the next round.
