Paul Knives

I have a Paul Presto.

With just a little practice, it flicks open one-handed.

I find the Wharncliffe blade on the Perfecto very attractive, and I'll probably also get one of those.

The Presto has a blade with a kind of double curvature. It works well for general tasks. The Perfecto's completely straight cutting edge would do an even better job on apples.

Downside: the blades are 2.25 inches, not in the 3-4 inch range.

As far as a good quality general purpose lightweight knife with a good edge and a one-handed stud, I have found to my surprise that Buck's (Mayo) "Cutback" is a very useful knife. I bought it for my checked bag when I was traveling, as I didn't want to risk my Leek in baggage handler land. It was half the price of the Leek, so losing it wouldn't trouble me unduly. It performed way better than expected, fit my hand well, opened easily, and the frame lock held tight. No complaints at all.

And, of course, there's always the Kershaw Leek (assisted) or the Vapor (not assisted). I have both. Happy with both. If you can get the Vapor with the round/conical stud you may prefer it to the angle cut stud. I have tried both and prefer the conical.

Let me also second JTW's suggestion on the Double Cross. If you're looking for the longer blade, you can get the Double Duty. The Double Duty has an extra quarter inch of length in the blades. Light, sharp out of the box, and quite pretty.

And, finally, just for fun, may I recommend a large sodbuster. I have the large Case Sod Buster in black with the stainless blade as well as the yellow in CV steel. The large yellow/CV is no longer in production. As a good, handy, all round utility knife, the sodbuster is hard to beat. Downside: no stud, no lock, no sharp point. I can open mine with one hand, but that's not the default, and it takes practice.

JTW, believe it or not 2-3 people who have seen my Sodbuster Jr have shuddered or said "That's a f***ing weapon, dude!"...sad huh?

Weapon??

[post=4371544]A little perspective[/post].

Here's a picture of a large sodbuster, along with assorted kitchen utility knives.

Notice how the large sodbuster is almost the smallest knife in the kitchen.

Next time somebody shudders over your "weapon," challenge him to find a knife in his kitchen that's any smaller. Really.

To be fair, these were fairly out of touch people. (A fairly recent African immigrant, probably raised in the British school system, which likely brainwashes the "good people" into thinking carrying a weaponlike object is the province of criminals, and the other a very leftist college student)...but, I was speechless, literally. I guess it was because my Sodbuster Jr looks sharp, and ...I dunno... the patina? Who the heck knows. I just gave them the basic response I give when someone gawks at a knife ignorantly: "Knives suck for self-defense. If you want to know about better methods, just ask."

A slender Opinel with olivewood handles.

Second the Kershaw Leek. I retard the AO function with my thumb when the easily frightened are present.It's never raised an eyebrow.
