I bought this rifle from the used rack at Dixon's in Kempton, PA in 2008. It is a Dixie Gunworks .50 caliber Tennessee Mountain Rifle restocked by George L. Dech of PA. He retained the original Miroku-made barrel, lock, triggers, and ramrod (which I've replaced). It also came with a spare frizzen.

It's been a good shooter that's a bit better handling than a factory original TMR, due to the turned down barrel.

beautiful rifle! a few questions.

I guess it is a left handed model?

was the part octagon part round barrel common to a period Tennessee rifle?

what is the protrusion on the right side of the buttstock? was that period correct and what is the reason for it?

Indeed, it is a southpaw rifle.

As it came from the factory, this rifle had a full octagon barrel as did most Tennessee and Pennsylvania rifles. Some may have been made part round but it wasn't common.

The protrusion on the right side of the butt is the cheek piece or cheek rest. It is period correct. Unless you're referring to the wire that is attached with staples on the bottom edge of the cheek piece. That is a vent pick. Not sure how PC it is but I like having it there.
