OK, 2 questions.

1) German Mausers. What were their trigger pulls like? Are they the standard military two-stage pulls? I ask, because I just bought a German Mauser, and shot it for the first time. It was a Russian capture, and Iraqi marked, if that makes any difference. There is no take up in the trigger, it is simpl a smooth pull to shoot. The barrel is cut off a half inch or less, so I am wondering if it was a modification at the same time. Either wa, it makes it a sweet shooter, 4 shots touching and the fifth right there.

2) Yugo Mauser. Weird accuracy problem. Two shots touching, next two touching, but either two inches up or down from the firswt two, and the same for the next two. Does it every time, with Czech, Romanian and Turk ammo. I'm about ready to give up on it.

Thanks!

1. Should be a 2 stage trigger, though its easily converted to a single stage by grinding off the hump for the first stage. sounds like the trigger was modified incorrectly and the second stage was removed- a new (used) mauser 98 trigger should be pretty cheap and easy to find.

2. I've found this to be pretty typical also- most of my mausers except for the swedes seem to group 3 shots pretty close, then 2 more shots an inch or so away that are close to eachother. Might be a bedding issue, but from what I've seen its been very consistant with mauser 98s to shoot this way. I've also found that it happens with handloads also until I get a sweet load where this phenomenon disappears. Maybe it could be something with the barrel harmonics as well also.

Off topic- I see you go to Mi Tech- you wouldn't happend to be studying Chem E?

No 1. Don't ask questions. Thank the Gun Gods and keep shooting.

No 2. Unequal pressure on the barrel?
Are the screws holding the action in the stock tight or not tight enough?

If you are getting anywhere from 3-5" at 100 yards that was pretty much average for a battle rifle.

Run some sandpaper along the inside of the barrel channel and handguard and smooth things out and check for bumps. Not too much sanding though.

If those shots are heating up the barrel quickly, it could throw your shots off. The light sanding inside the barrel channel is to make the contact between the barrel and the stock as uniform as possible.

Good luck

OK, thats what I though on #1. I may look into a new trigger, but as Zeke mentioned, it'll probably stay a gift from the gun Gods, esp. since the barrel was cut.

#2 wouldn't bother me so much, but when I do get shots at the same level as each other, they are usually touching. I'll give your ideas a shot.

Oh, and cracked butt, nope. CS freshman.
