hi. while cleaning out a home we are selling i came across a german knife. looks to be a bone handle with a metal lion head at the base of the handle. on the blade itself it says the following:

SOLINGEN CUTLERY
B.SVO809A
MADE IN GERMANY

prettty cool, any idea what the history of it is and a value to be placed on it?

thanks!

Hard to say without any pics but it sounds like a pretty standard German style hunting knife Are you sure it isn't Solingen on the blade. The figural pommel should add some collector's interest as they are not quite so common. I would guess probably in the 75 to 100 range on value...pics would help a bunch tho.

Solingen is a City in North Rhine Westphalia, Germany.
Its famous for the manufacturing of Knives for all purposes.
Its the only city in the world which name is protected by law as a brand, meaning that only knifes completly manufactured within the solingen district are allowed to be promoted as "Solinger Messer" (solingen knives).
Based on the description, I assume that the knive in subject is a "Jagdnicker" which is still manufactured by the Company Lindner.
As being said before, the condition, but also the etching on the blade is important to make a guestimate of value.
