im not saying that breaking the law is the correct responce to this scenerio but the "illigal" pepper spray may have been a good idea in the end after all

spray and run is your best bet in a situation like that i mean if there were no witnesses for assault there surely wouldnt be any witnesses for a pepper spraying right?

as for the state laws of no self defence im afraid i would be very defiant and probably end up in a jail cell because i dont give a rats patoot where i am no law will ever make me comply to a butt whooping ill ALWAYS fight back in some way if i feel im in danger

and the cops advice is complete garbage you never know when or where the wrong place or time will be its not like we are born with a gps locator for trouble to break out we werent at the location where this happened so maybe this street was a common place to SAFELY walk at night and these random jerks decided to make it the wrong place at the wrong time
most of the time people will do there best to avoid "the wrong place" you dont walk down back alleys in the ghetto at night this is a duh situation but the officer envoked the age old no no of revictomization on your poor friend

im not cop bashing but if your not the solution your part of the problem

and in the future carry pepper spray and wear good sneakers

Hi, I think something should be done, because if MAYBE next time they will rape a female or beat someone to death. He shold take agood lawyer and make some pressure.

Unfortunatly your friend was alone and there was a group of frat boys it boils down to his word against a group of cowardly liars.

With the amount of surveillance in the world today, the odds of this happening where it was caught on tape is probably pretty good. Especially in a college town.

College towns are in fact actual towns. They usually have an actual police department that has nothing to do with the college cops. They are almost always at odds with each other. Whichever one gave you the brush off, go to the other and play both sides against the middle. You can't guarantee a good investigation, but you should be able to get a case opened.

If the locals aren't responsive, you can try the state police as well.

Additionally, you can pursue it within the school's disciplinary system. IF they weren't just frat boy types, but anyone was wearing letters, you can take it up with the internal system that deals with frats and granting them charters on campus.

Then of course there is bad press and negative attention. You can bitch and moan about assaults not being followed up on to the mayor's office or the town council. Someone is getting paid so they don' t have to hear about this crap, and they aren't doing their job. Additionally, you can bring it to the local press. Also, don't rule out the student newspaper. Tuition goes up every year, and it isn't that hard to get the student paper to ask just what the heck are the students paying for. Being ignored by emergency services is usually not considered amongst the things one shells out good money for. Bad press in the student paper gets more attention then you would think from the administration.

You don't make it clear whether your friend could name the attackers. If your friend could not name his attackers, then who did he intend to press charges against? The cops can't press charges against "a group of frat boys." They have to press charges against specific individuals.

If he does have names, then civil charges are the way to go at this point. Photos of his injuries, the more graphic the better will be helpful.

McBuck-I would suggest you do some research on Georgias firearms laws. Particularly gun free zones-like schools-there are some allowances made but unless I'm mistaken within 1000 feet of a school is supposed to be a gun free zone. A student carrying could get themselves into a lot of trouble. I'm not saying this is how it should be but it is important to know the laws in ones home state. There is a whole section on Georgia Firearms Laws at www.georgiapacking.org

Tell your friend to rest up, let it go and take some self defense classes. I would also recommend getting in touch with a lawyer and start carrying weapons anyway. The good news is that if he can't report the crime, then the perps can't report him for counter attacking with weapons.

"Officer, it wasn't fair... We were assaulting him, really kicking his butt, and he pepper sprayed us and stabbed my friend in the leg..."

Yeah... that is case that wins with the jury...

My point here is that sometimes the law turning a blind eye and being ineffective (for whatever reason) isn't all bad.

I would also call the police department and speak to the highest person you can in the food chain and tell him that what they told you was sexist and tantamount to telling a woman that "She was asking for it." Remind them that YOU bloody well pay the salaries. Just my $0.02 centavos.

Here at MTU, a frat guy threw one of the local cops threw the front window of the house after he got pepper sprayed, they ended up tasering and bean bagging him. He still got to graduate, only spent one night in jail.....rumor has it daddy made a small contribution to the coffers of the university. :scrutiny:

Sumthin' like that happened to me once...Beat up by a gang of a$$es...It was the best thing that ever happened to me...A real eye opener...
Since that day, whenever something like that happens...I lower my head and engage the leader/ mouthpiece...Go for it as though your life depends on it ( it may)...Throw out any notion of fair fights and honor and all of that crap...Fight like your life depends on it...

It works for me.....so far....your mileage may vary.
