3/4 of an inch thick, very stiff, and not affective at all against contact shots or fragmentation (Both of which are a very real threat for us).
:what:
I'll keep mine, thanks. That does sound fairly awful. My first vest was issued to me when I worked mall security. Sounds about the same. I bought my own as soon as I was able..Much better.

Maybe the reason they're uncomfortable is because they're not properly fitted and/or not using the latest in textile and sewing technology?

The Second Chance Monarch vests I have are 100% Kevlar and are very comfortable. You can take one of the panels and squeeze it into a balll; that's how soft it is!

Body Armor Gives Felons Upper Hand

This is an attitude that pisses me off ... of course body armor, firearms, possessing two arms and legs, not being blind, etc ... all of it gives Felons the "upper hand", but it making them illegal for non Felons DOESN'T TAKE THEM AWAY FROM FELONS IT JUST TAKES AWAY ANY EQUALIZATION US NON-FELONS HAD!!!

:fire:

Body Armor Gives _____________ Upper Hand.

Good, Bad, Ugly, whatever ... everyone's name can go in that blank.

I still can't see why people want a vest...
I don't apppreciate the gummit and politicians enacting more laws when current laws on the books are not enforced. Those of us that make up the Republic that are law abiding and all should be allowed our rights.

I mean folks do RO matches, volunteer as fireman and volunteer emergency roles in times of riots and such. I can see an EMT wanting to wear one if having to go into a area while a riot is going on. Same for a Dr., Nurse, Med flight crew being helo'd in during a riot. Volunteer Deputy Sheriff, maybe a farmer out blowing up beaver dams, or suspect of poachers on property...he has a right to be prudent while the Sheriff and Game Folks show up.

IIRC some members of the Media were wearing vests - asked for and insisted on having vests while doing various on-site reporting in regards to "snipers". I guess Media is "special" and elite. Regular old members of this Republic must not be - huh?

We have always had wannabes , be it the type of dress emulating tactical, military, fireman, EMT's to Trekkies. Don't figure it will ever stop.

Like some other stuff I can think of , "comforting not comfortable" , members of the Republic have a right to these - Not just the elite, gummit, politicians...etc.

expire every 5 years
Only the warranty from the manufacturer expirtes in five years; the vests themselves are generally still good and continue to function at the rating they were manufactured for, unless issues such as UV/ chemical exposure come into play. There were also some "waterproof" vests from back in the 80s that didn't hold up well over time.
As for being comfortable, the newer vests may be lighter and more comfortable, but anytime you wrap your body in a material that doesn't allow it to "breathe", its not comfortable. Agencies continue to buy the older thicker vests because of dollar issues. Those roll-into-a-ball vests are VERY expensive.

Reading that article, it sounds as if body armor kills people. I thought is was a purely defensive piece of cloth with a plate sometimes.
