Corzine, Lautenberg To Introduce Bill Banning Assault Pistol Use

POSTED: 10:07 am EST February 23, 2005

WASHINGTON -- New Jersey's U.S. senators plan to introduce a bill that would make it illegal for anyone, except a police officer or military official, to purchase or use an assault pistol that fires bullets capable of penetrating a bulletproof vest.

The Five-SeveN gun made by FN Herstal of Belgium has already been denounced by three national police organizations and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The handgun is small and lightweight and easily concealed in a person's pocket, the groups said.

Last month, the Brady Campaign released a videotape of its staff test-firing one of the handguns it had purchased from a Virginia gun dealer. The bullets penetrated a police Kevlar vest.

Democratic Sens. Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg said the guns are a menace to society.

"There is absolutely no reason anyone other than law enforcement and the military should possess firepower capable of piercing protective body armor," Lautenberg said.

The two senators plan to introduce the Protect Law Enforcement Armor (PLEA) Act next week. The bill would ban the sale, purchase and use of the handgun and its ammunition by anyone other than a police officer or military official. The bill would also prohibit the gun and bullets from being made in the United States.

Police officials from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Brotherhood of Police Officers say every police officer in the country needs to familiarize themselves with the weapon because it poses a great risk to the public.

The U.S. office of FN Herstal in McLean, Va., did not respond Tuesday to an e-mail message seeking comment.

They would have to ban the Desert Eagle as well.

It would seem that creating solutions to nonexistent problems is a speciality of our nation's lawmakers.

Are there any other handguns (with standard handgun rounds in FMJ) that could do well against armor?
And, they still don't realise that we can only buy JHPs in 5.7mm.
Edit:
I didn't want a Five SeveN at first, but now I do.

CZ-52 7.62x25 is supposed to go thru some protection.

Also, about this statement
Police officials from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Brotherhood of Police Officers say every police officer in the country needs to familiarize themselves with the weapon because it poses a great risk to the public.
How is it a great(er) risk to the public than any other firearm can be? Most people I know do not wear body armor as part of their daily wardrobe so how is it a great risk to me the public.

Just one question.

What's an "assault pistol"?

Is this one of them, Mr. Lautenberg?

Ah yea, forgot about the CZ-52.
Agreed to the "How is this more of a public safety problem?"
I sure as heck don't wear kevlar.

The bill would ban the sale, purchase and use of the handgun and its ammunition by anyone other than a police officer or military official.

If it was really such a "menace to society," cops wouldn't be able to buy it.

After all, if a cop goes against a criminal wearing armor, more than likely they will be using shotguns with slugs or a .223 carbine of some sort.

I call Shenanigans!

Isn't this the same bunch of yahoos that, with their close personal buddy Tom Diaz, declared the S&W .500 a "vestbuster" last year?

Isn't there a limit to how many vestbusters they get to expose per year? (Didn't Vestbuster of the Week used to be a feature in Penthouse?)

Their foolishness usually results in a rush to buy the products they are trying to ban as an unintended consqequence. Witness their so called AWB that helped sell more AR and AK clones during the ban than in the 10 years preceding.

It's never about the facts, it's always about the sound byte and photo op with these guys.

My speculation is that the MMM and VPC are really to the bottom of the barrel with donations and are getting desparate for an issue that can get some traction with the public at large to drive membership and donations.

They now have two or three shills posting to each other on their "new" MMM message board trying to look like its active and interesting.

It's really pathetic that they can't even get a serious turnout of the "Libbies" for their events anymore. As for these two Bozos, Lautenberg looks like an extra from night of the living dead and I think Corzine imagines himself as Hillary's Attorney General in '08.

Its this kind of mentality among politicians and other so called experts that is going to sink this country. If politicians and police organizations have this kind of "stupid mentality" then how can they logically think about solutions to other problems such as the national debt, worthless dollar, illigal drugs, crack head politicians, social security, health care, taxes, taxes, more taxes, dogs living with cats, etc in this country?

I wonder how much it would cost to condemn New Jersey, pay the 5th Amendment reimbursement, pave it, and turn it into America's nuclear waste repository? :)

"There is absolutely no reason anyone other than law enforcement and the military should possess firepower capable of piercing protective body armor," Lautenberg said.

I am now forwarding off news of todays shooting in Texas to Mr. Lautenberg, to inform him of EXACTLY why there is a reason someone who is not LEO should have one.

Mark Wilson, RIP.

Geeze, so we shouldn't be allowed to have the 5.7mm because it's too small, yet we can't have the .50 BMG because it's too big.

Anyone else feel like Goldilocks?

Harry Tuttle:

For god sakes Harry, don't tell them about it.

This aside, does their latest proposed ban, another exercise in the Pass A Law Syndrome surprise anyone? Had you thought that the ultimate goals of the anti-gun mob had possibly changed in any meaningful way?

I'm proposing a bill that every single New Jersey elected official be thrown out of office and replaced with a regular citizen. The FBI just arrested 11 of them with likely more to follow. I hate what they've done to a good state with a seathing hatred.

It's simpler than the 200 foot wall: guard the bridges, patrol the river, and let anyone through who can correctly tell you what "molon labe" means.

"There is absolutely no reason anyone other than law enforcement and the military should possess firepower capable of piercing protective body armor," Lautenberg said.

Considering that between 15 and 25% of cops killed on the job in any given year are killed with their own weapons, maybe they shouldn't have them either (to follow this line of thinking.)
