I'm reloading for my sporterized 6.5x55 sweetish Mauser. The pill is the Berger VLD 140 gr. This is where it gets complicated... I have a lot of H4895 and I want to see how it throws this pill. My Berger book doesn't list H4895 but does list IMR4895 and start load is 35.0 Max load is 37.2 but now if I go to the Hodgdon website it says start load 32.5 Max load 35.8 but that is listed for a 140gr. Spr sp... so where do I start with my load development ?

Does hodgdon list the h4895? If so I'd use their data and work up, special attention to Berger seating depth with that charge.

Hodgdon does list H4895, Id use that data. The Swedish Mauser isnt known for be exceedingly strong so id stay within known pressure guidelines.
That said Berger VLDs tend to like to be loaded right out against the lands, or very close to them. This, along with there relatively short for weight bearing surfaces, makes it hard to guess what pressures and velocities will be when compared to more "standard" shaped bullets. I would not expect velocity with a berger so loaded to match what is listed on hodgdons site.

If youll give me your COAL, Barrel length, and Water Capacity (in weight) to overflow of a resized and primed case from your gun, ill run the data on quickloads and give you the results. From what im seeing you should be safe with using hodgdons data tho.
The slower powders show a distinct velocity and fill ratio advantage, I THINK I'd look at 4350 to 7828 If you decide to change powders.

Just to give you a little insight, as to estimated velocities for H and IMR 4895. I get an avg 2367 fps using 37 grains IMR 4895/CCI #34/PPU 139 FMJ-BT, shot from my Swedish AG-42. PRIVI factory delivers almost identical results. I'd love to stoke it up a bit, and use a much slower propellant, but these SA rifles are direct impingement, have a very violent, and over-gassed action, and already have quirky ammo requirements (supposed to use oiled rounds for Mil M41 IIRC).

So, yes either 4895 can work, but it sure is not ideal if you want to bring out the rifles maximum velocity performance. Good luck.

Thank you for the info! I am more just after the best group I can get I have a load worked up with H4831 that works good. But I have a ton of this H4895 so I want to see what I can get with it. I will chronograph each load to see what I get.
