Howdy, folks. I have a question about the Ghost Ring/Heat Shield from ATI. It says that it fits all 12, 16, 20 and .410 gauge shotgun barrels. Now this seems confusing to me. The instructions talk about rubber spacing, screws and whatnot. Now my questions for you are:

Has anyone ever bought one/how did it work?
Does it come with all of the goodies to install it?
Would you consider it worth the $30 they're asking?
Should I have a gunsmith install it for me?

Discuss.

Oh...It will be for a either a Mossberg 500 or Remmy 870 (20 or 12 gauge).

To answer your questions:

1) No I've never bought one or owned one (take that into consideration for what follows)
2) It probably does (I had an ATI buttstock that did)
3) Not likely (ATI stuff is made cheap and it shows, not to mention that ghost rings work when they are near your eye, not halfway to the muzzle of your shotgun)
4) If I were going to buy one I would consider it strictly a DIY thing. That being said, I'd steer clear.

In order to work properly, a ghost ring rear sight needs to be installed on the receiver reasonably close to your eye. The ATI version puts the rear sight at the front of the receiver ( http://www.atigunstocks.com/items/SBS4600.html ).

My own preference for ghost rings FWIW is MMC's offering, with a front sight silver soldered onto the barrel ( http://www.mmcsight.com/shotgun.htm ).

I wouldn't bother with the ATI product, YMMV of course.

I was thinking the same thing about location in relation to the eye. I've been in the Marines for 3 years and the peep sights there are perfect. I was just thinking that maybe it's a shotgun so it's different (I'm still kind of a Philistene when it comes to shotguns). Crap then, eh? Thanks.

friend of mine has one on his 870 along with a bunch of other ATI junk..

the stuff I've gotten from em are solid, but anyway...

friend has one, I tried it. Worked ok, but nothing spectacular. I prefer beads anyway.

I started to put one on my 870 but right from the beginning it went to crap. You have to bend out two tabs which if you're not careful scratches the heatshield. Also it doesn't slip over the barrel very easy and will scratch the barrel while you are trying to get it on.

After about 5 minutes of messing with it I gave up, it wasn't worth it to me.
