What's up with the GIBBS quest extreme enfields??? any good. I'm really interested in a cheap 308 with a scope moutn etc. And the gibbs are CHEAP!!!!

Did you see one in person?

You didn't touch it, did you? If so walk quickly away, and wash your hands thoroughly.

Just use the search function here and on The Firing Line, with the keyword "Gibbs". It may even bring up my own bad experiences with one. Many have taken to calling the guns "Fibbs". :(

I just bought a Gibbs Enfield jungle carbine in 308 at my local gunstore. Gibbs calls it the "#7", I think. It's a very nicely made rifle. The rifle started life as an Enfield Ishapore 2a1 and was converted by Gibbs to an Enfield Jungle Carbine. It's a very nice rifle with a mirror bore and a parkerized finish. New stock. All functions work like new. My experience with this rifle has been extremely positive. But it is my only experience with a Gibbs rifle. I've heard that others don't like Gibbs at all but I don't know the reason for their dislike.

I have a C&R, I'm a collector, I don't bubba-ize guns at all and I hate to see it done. But this rifle was priced right and is very functional. I realize it has no collector value but it will be a great shooter for me.

It's up to you. If you're a complete purist, a Gibb's rifle will turn your stomach. But if you realize its just a shooter and what's done is done, check it out and make sure it's put together properly and functions well. Buy it if you like it.

GEOJAP Pretty much summed up my experience as well...

I have the same model he has. It shoots good the finish is nice and I have had 0 problems with it after about 700 rnds. I have heard a lot of complaints about them, but mine is nice.

Geojap hit it on the head...mine is a fun shooter, but I'm not an enfield collector. I got it in a trade with a couple other guns. ymmv

It's not just a purist thing, guys.

Ever see the front end of a Gibbs "Tanker" NoIMkIII carbine launch itself downrange in less than one magazine's worth of .303? I have, dried and sloppy application of carpenter's wood glue notwithstanding. Evidently, it's not that rare an occurrence with the brand. Truthfully, I wouldn't give the trained monkeys at Gibbs a banana to peel, they'd probably mess that up, too. :fire:

Then there's the marketing, passing themselves off as rare military collectibles. So rare they had to stop selling their faux No5Mk1 Jungle Carbines when the real things started showing up on these shores from Malaysian stocks a couple years ago. :scrutiny:

I don't doubt that Gibbs puts out some crap. You don't get a rep as bad as they have building top quality rifles. My point is that it is possible to get a good one. Odds may be against it, but they are out there.

Haven't had any serious problems with my QEII. Metal work could be better but it was from India build a long time ago so don't expect much. Despite a few rounds keyholing, accuracy on mine has been adequate (even counting the keyholes). Don't shoot it much past 100 yds but benchrest accuracy isn't what I bought it for. Nothing has flown off of my rifle. Only problem with mine is the erratic ejection. Anywhere from barely clearing to 5 feet out. Aftermarket mags are, in my gun, useless. No good way of putting a scope on it. The scope mount provided wasn't worth the metal it was made out of.
