So my girlfriend decided she wanted to try shooting after hearing me talk about it. We discussed it and I sent her the link to Cornered Cat. She did some reading and would ask questions from time to time and I would do my best to answer. Eventually when she said she wanted to go to the range we did. I took a Buckmark .22 with a 6 inch bull barrel (my only .22 handgun). Unfortunately I only have access to indoor ranges so we had to contest with a little noise (we wore earmuffs and plugs). The first trip she kinda decided she didnt want to shoot and asked to just watch me through the glass. Im not 100% sure what it was, but she seemed a little afraid.

I didnt pressure her to do it or try again. She seemed angry that she that backed away from it more than anything. Eventually she asked if we could go again she said she didnt want to let it beat her and she wanted to try it really bad. So we went on Friday at around 1:30 in the afternoon. Only one other person there shooting a .22 so no noise and no one to make her nervous as an audience. (Other than me I guess)

She watched me shoot one magazine, then she did some dry-fire while aiming down range at the target. Seemed like she was starting to screw up some courage. She requests to try "just one" so I show her that I am loading one round into the magazine. Chamber the round and hand her the gun. She lined up the sights and lined them up again, and rechecked that they were lined up right and then after I guess convincing herself that it was going to be alright squeezed the trigger.

The next thing I saw I will never forget. There was a little hole in the 7 ring on the target, and my girlfriend set the gun down (slide still locked open muzzle down range we went over safety at least a dozen times). She turned and looked over her shoulder with this look on her face... the best way I can describe it is when you see a little kid pitch a fit before he or she gets a shot at the doctors. Screaming, crying the whole deal then when its done theres this look. Like "Was that it? Is that all there was? That didn't hurt at all! I got all worked up for this?!?!

Next thing I know shes asking if she can do some more. So I have her help me load up the magazines. By the end of 30 min she went from afraid to shoot to loading magazines, charging the gun and removing empty magazines on her own. :what: I just kept the magazines loaded and let her do her thing. Turns out the greatest fear became that she wouldn't be able to take her targets home to show off...

As we headed back to the car, it was all grins. "Aw man that was fun. I can't believe I was afraid of that. When I locked my elbow like this I did a lot better, NEXT TIME Im going to do better." "Oh really? Next time?" I asked her. "Oh yes, next time youre going shooting you better tell me, this was great I want to do it again."

Maybe I created a monster?

Outstanding! Now you have somewhere couple-ish to drag your other friends to.

I've seen a couple hundred newbies try shooting, and 99% of them really enjoy it. Just got to get more shooters to take more newbs out, and that'll solve all this gun control silliness:

"This is what an AK-47 is? This is the gun they're always complaining about on the news? Huh, now I don't see what they're all upset about."

I remember the first time I went shooting with my gf. I took a cheap little 22 piston (Jennings) and my Taurus 66. Since it was my birthday I splurged for both 38's and 357 magnums. She shot the 22 for a while, I shot the 38's. Then went for the 357's. She complained about how loud they were (we were at an indoor range). I said I'd stop shooting them if she shot the 38. It took a bit of convincing, she seemed to be scared of it, but finally after a couple more cylinders of the magnums, she relented. Long story short, after shooting a few rounds with the Taurus (38 special only) I couldn't get the gun back. :D

It makes a good couples activity.

I'm hoping to take my girlfriend shooting for the first time this weekend also. She has wanted to for awhile but our schedules have conflicted and we've never gotten around to it yet. This weekend, especially if this warm weather holds up, looks to be very promising.

Funny thing is, I also just reintroduced a friend to shooting (last time he fired a gun was in the Boy Scouts) this last Saturday. He is now planning on buying himself a firearm. Looks like this will be a productive week as far as spreading this glorious addictions goes.

sounds like my wife.... I like when she comes shooting, but I do enjoy my time alone away from everyone at the range too...luckily she doesnt want to come all the time.

heh. i guess it beats having your GF standing over your one shoulder watching you shoot a 22 pistol and hitting her dead in the forhead with a casing. i had to pop the clip out and unload the gun and set it down so i could laugh my ass off. she was pissed at me.

but then again she was sitting shooting an old e ring enfield at a target. she wasent scared. but missed each time but it was fun shooting with her. she was jealose i tosted a can at 100 yards with the pistol and she couldent hit dirt. but she had fun and im glad she did.

Awesome! A Buckmark is probably the perfect gun for that. Simple to use, relatively quiet, no kicking and extremely accurate. A great way to build confidence.

I remember being at the range with a friend of mine while he was trying to teach his sister to shoot. Even his 9mm (I think it was a Sigma, IIRC) was a little too much for her at first, so she lost interest pretty quick. I think if one of us had ANY .22 she'd have stuck with it that night.

Of course, it probably didn't help things that two lanes down in the indoor range a guy was shooting his .480 Ruger. Personally, I appreciated the extra light on my target from his muzzle flash. :D

Hey, that sounds an awful lot like the first time I went shooting, and well here I am. Hope she continues to stay interested!

Excellent job...She conquered a fear, and created a hobby.

I remember the first time I took my g/f. The whole time she just shot my 6" SA ruger and she had an absolute blast...I thought to myself "sweet, something fun we can do together while I'm shooting my other guns!" THEN, unfortunately I let her shoot my AR 15...Now I have to sneak out sometimes so I can get some range time on it.:D I feel like I'm cheating:evil:

That's great! The more women we bring in to the shooting sports the better.

I did something quite simliar about three years ago. So far it has cost me a Browning Golden Clays special skeet with sub-gauge tubeset and an extra 15,000 reloads last year. OTOH, I never have to make excuses for shooting or wanting to travel for skeet tourneys. It's worked out pretty good, just kind of expensive.

Yeah Im pleased and she really wants to go again.

Dirkster we were at A&S's range in Youngwood PA. Its nice because they only charge you range time and targets you can bring your own ammo. And if you have a group you can rent out one of the 6 lane halves in advance and only your group will be on that range.
