I like Protolith's answer. Plan for the long term. I am willing to bet .308 surplus will be a little cheaper and more widely available after the war is over. (at least I am betting)

If you don't want to stock ammo for a rifle throw it in the safe. If you put up the Garand I can guarantee you two things:

1. It will still work if you need it
2. It will not decline in value if you want to sell it later.
 
If dropping .30-06 for .308 means you plan to sell the Garand, then don't drop .30-06. Just get a spam can of Greek surplus already in clips and put it with your Garand in the safe, if you don't want to "stock" .30-06 anymore. That's 192 rounds all ready to go if you have an emergency and have to use the Garand.
