Hi,

I want to give my father a gun (.38 revolver) for Christmas. He doesn't own one (other than my old .22 he gave me when I was 12 and is still at the house) but I think he should have one. He'd certainly accept it, but probably just won't get around to buying one himself. My mother also probably wouldn't want him to. But if I just gave it to him, said "Here, Dad, you should have this," he'd take it and put it in his nightstand and that would be that.

What are the laws on this? Will he need a permit (he lives in Connecticut, which I believe has pretty strict laws)?

Just curious if anyone knew about this.

I live in Alabama so I can't speak to Connecticut laws but in Al. you may give a firearm to any adult who isn't a felon. No permit is required to keep a handgun in your home. Shotguns and rifles are frequent gifts for teenaged boys and the local law enforcement doesn't seem to notice.

My father lives in CT and he just went through the process last year. In order to take possession of a handgun in CT, one has to get a permit first. It didn't take too much effort for him to get a permit and, as a bonus, he can carry if he wants to do so. You have to have a permit before you can legally own a handgun in CT. It involves a safety course, background check, some paperwork and waiting for a few months. FYI: In CT, it's a crime for you to privately give/sell/transfer a handgun to someone who is ineligible to own one.

So much for "shall not be infringed" huh? In Alabama the only people not eligible to possess firearms are (1) convicted felons and some misdemeanors (2)a minor or (3) someone with mental illness. I think giving, selling or loaning a firearm of any description to a convicted felon is a violation of Federal law.
