I wanted to get another Glock. I sold my G26 to my father in law and bought a 1911. I love the 1911 but now want a 9mm again. I was thinking initially of the 19 because it is small enough to conceal however when I felt the difference between the 17 and the 19 in my hand the 17 won out on feel by far! I wonder if that is just because I am used to handling a full size 1911 now that I have owned one for a while. Anyways does anyone have a hard time concealing the 17?

I also considered the Sig 228 but it is fairly expensive. Actually the Sig 228, Kahrs, XD9's & Glocks all feel good to me. I am used to DAO, DA/SA & SAO so that is not an issue.

Money is somewhat of an issue. I have about $600 to spend although some of that will have to go towards a good holster too.

I would prefer to buy a gun brand new however that reality might not be possible if I go with certain brands other than Glock.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

jj

I love my G19, but if the G17 feels better for you I'd go with it. I don't have any experience with carrying a full-size Glock, but the compact G19 hides very well with the right holster and clothes...

On a budget - search for "RM Holster works." I carry my G19 in their "Low Rider" model (I presume it's also available for full-sized models). Only around $50, and I got it about 3 days after I placed my order! :D

The 9mm line up in the Glock inventory is their nicest guns & IMO, the G19 is the cream of that crop...go w/ the 19 ;)

Shot and compared a Glock 19 and a Sig 229 and although they are similar in size I thought that the 19 was a much better carry weapon. I have a 226 and love it, but I must admit that the 19 impressed me, even though in my opinion Sig is a better overall weapon, I liked the Glock. Never thought I would even be thinking about a Glock, but now I am.

Both...

speaking from experience...both. Make it a G19C. :)

Depends...

Unless you plan to mostly use this gun as a range/competition gun, I would recommend the G19.

I carry a G19 occasionally. I do prefer the "fit" of the G19 over the G17 (I own both).
If the 17 fits you better, that's the gun to go for. As far as concealed carry...if you really want to carry the 17, you'll have to dress around it. Right off the bat, start wearing sport jackets. Sports jackets can conceal a pretty big gun, IMHO, and can be worn with almost any attire, anywhere.

In fact, I bought a leather sports jacket from Sportsman's Guide just to make it easier to carry the G19. The jacket was less then $100.00 and is quite long enough to conceal a G17. Just use some common sense!

I don't carry my G17 as it has a 3.5# trigger...too light for CCW carry.

I'm not a semi-auto guy but I do shoot them from time to time. I have shot the XD in .45 and it was great, I'm told the .40 and 9mm shoot just as well.

I know you are talking about getting a Glock but before you make your decision you really should shoot the Springfield XD first. Besides, you get "XD Gear" with your purchase, that's a holster, double mag pouch, 2 mags and a mag loader. Since you get everything you need for around $500 that leaves plenty in your budget for a case or 2 of ammo !! http://www.springfield-armory.com/prod-xdpstl.shtml

I own both...the 17 is the wifes night stand gun and the 19 is my off duty carry mostly (or the P3AT)...I like the extra size of the 17 grips but the 19 will hide easier...my opinion

Its a tough call. I think I would go with the 19, but just because that tiny difference in size can be a lot of difference in concealment.

Now, I have both the 17's and 19's and I have only concealed my G31 (same size as a G17) a couple times. It works, but you really have to dress around it. I do carry my G23 (same size as a G19) quite a bit and it works well.

Good luck, but the reality is both are great choices.

Glock 17 or 19...both are good. The 17 is concealable with an IWB holster that has lots of forward cant. Try a DeSantis Cozy Partner, which is very comfortable, durable, and has more forward cant than most holsters.

The 19 is very concealable. You can get A&G magazine adapters to turn it into a 17 grip.

Although many folks don't realize it, the grips of the 17 / 19 / 26 are not just longer or shorter, they are different shapes. The bump on the backstrap is higher up the shorter the grip, so different models are going to fit people differently. The 26 actually fits me best, but the 17 is very comfortable with a Hogue rubber grip added.

I think the G19 is the cream of the crop in the Glock line up...compact, accurate & very reliable. Plus they are as the tought as they are ugly :D Get the Glock! ;)

xd service model 9mm will do you just fine! you have owned a glock in the past, i think you should try an xd on for size! :)

but if you must go with a glock again i think the 19 would be the best all around. especially in the size department. the 17's are nice but for the added size and weight i really see no advantages that you get from the 17 over the 19, the 19 will accoplish anything you want it to and will still be compact enough for carry, and though the 17 might be concealable and able to be carried, the 19 will definetly be a little easier.

If you decide on a Glock you already know which one to get.

however when I felt the difference between the 17 and the 19 in my hand the 17 won out on feel by far!

It sounds like you should go with the 17 since it feels the best to you. Personally I would go with the 19, because it feels the best to me.

Whichever you like better.

I went 19 because I got a smoking good deal (LNIB with 2 15rd mags for $400)

I've shot 17's too and honestly they feel about the same to me. 17 feels slightly more relaxed grip-wise, 19 feels like its locked into my hands when I grab it. I wear L/XL gloves, fwiw.

The absolute best Glock I have ever felt though was a G19 with a grip reduction. That was pure pleasure to hold.

I had to qualify with a 9mm back when I was an Armored Technician, and I managed to do it, but the 17 for me didn't feel right. I was looking long and hard at the Kahr cw-9 as a carry pistol, having carried snubs for about the past 8 years or so, but after reading up on the mouse guns, stopping power plus reliability made me go for the GLOCK 19. I can't see having to maintain the springs, failures, anything which may prevent the gun from going bang when you need it, regardless of ease of carry.

I think the G19 is pretty much a good comprimise between the carry pistol for duty and the concealable pistol. I think the g19 does both very well, and having 15 124 gr +p rds makes me feel a whole lot better about carrying in general. I have put over 300 rds through it without a single failure, it field strips and is clean in 10 minutes, and it doesn't have 15 different safeties and other kinds of stuff that can break if it is carried every day. Sturdy, lightrweight and reliable, the g19 was my choice. In fact, I wanted it before I started looking at the Kahr and KT lines. Glad I went with it. Best thing you can do is rent both and shoot them side by side. Then decide. That's why they make more than one gun. The choice is yours.

The 17 and 19 are both fantastic weapons.
I carry a 17 concealed every day with no problems. (I am a giant, though 6'6" 300 pounds)
I have a couple of friends who carry 19s with no problems.

The main thing is having a good belt and holster to aid in concealment. I never thought it was a big deal until I bought quality leather gear and it does make a big difference.

Pick the one that fits your hand best. The one you can shoot best. The one you can conceal best.

I am used to carrying and concealing full sized handguns. It is all I have ever carried. A Colt 1911, Sig 2340, G17, all have ridden on my hip with no problems. Go with what YOU are most comfortable with, not with what others think you should carry.

And FWIW my 17 in its holster and 2 17 round reloads are easily concealed with a pair of jeans or slacks, a good belt, and a polo or button up shirt.
Not always comfortable, but as I was told "You dont carry expecting to be comfortable, you carry for comfort"....or something along those lines.

I bought the G19!!!

I ended up buying the 19. I realized that the 19 I originally felt right before I started this post had a hole in the front of the grip right where my pinky goes which felt kind of weird. Anyways I shot both the 17 and the 19 and they both felt great however the 19 was just a little smoother. Maybe that rental gun was a little more broken in. I am very pleased with the purchase. I do plan on buying a G17 in the future.

Now I am having issues deciding on which IWB holster to buy:uhoh:

There are so many out there and the one I want most (Versa Max) takes FOREVER to get....which to me is discouraging.

Thanks for all your input.

You did not go wrong in picking the Glock model 19. It is a superb gun. But for your next purchase, consider a 1911 in 9mm rather than the Glock 17. You apparently like the "government model," and a 1911 in 9mm gives you a gun you like, plus the savings of the smaller caliber. Both Springfield and Kimber have very nice 9mm 1911s, ranging from full-size all steel guns to diminutive alloy-frame guns (probably the nicest of which is Springfield's newest addition, the EMP).

Just something to add to your confusion!

I shoot my 19 very well but struggled with my 17 when I had it. Apparently the grip angle is a bit different, or so I'm told.
