Is the glock 19 considerably easier to conceal than the glock 17. I am considering one or the other.

The G19 is the subcompact model, and the G17 is the standard model.

Here are the dimensions:
G19
L: 6.85" in
H: 5.00"in
W 1.18"
Capacity: 17/19/33

G17:
L: 7.32"
H: 5.43"
W: 1.18"
Capacity: 19/33

To me the G19 is the perfect carry size for anybody with a medium and more body structure.

The glock 17 is the full size, the 19 is the compact and the 26 is the subcompact, all of them are in 9mm. The 19 is a great all around gun. Its small enough for conceiled carry, but its big enough that lots of law enforcement agencies use it as there duty gun. I also have a subcompact glock in 40, the Glock 27. Thats size is great too. I just ordered myself a new Glock 19 RTF2 yesterday. Can't wait to shoot it.

If you are going to buy a Glock and you are not eligible for a law enforcement/military discount, then find a shop that will give you the GSSF discount. It is the Glock Sport Shooting Foundation. If you join that you get one Glock purchase a year at law enforcement pricing. Plus you are eligible to attend the Glock armorer's course. I just got my Glock 19 yesterday out the door for $519 which I thought was pretty good, and that is including the $35 membership cost.

just held one today and they want $539. I thought that was reasonable

I currently own a Glock 17 and a 26. I love them. My wife stole my 26 which I purchased to CCW. Now, I think I'm going to get a 19. My advice would be - if you are going to CCW, you will be happy with the 19. I CCW my 17 all the time, but OWB only (with vest or jacket covering). It's a good feeling to be carrying around 18 "chances" - and know that it is 100% reliable (as tested).

Sorta...

The dimension that Glock quotes as length is really only the length of the slide. The overall length of the gun is greater due to the rake of the grip.

The G19 is called a compact but it's really not much smaller than some autos that would be called full-size pistols. The subcompact Glock 9mm is the G26.

Magazine capacities with standard magazines are 10 rounds for the G26, 15 for the G19 and 17 for the G17.

The larger magazines will fit in the smaller guns--for example, you can use a G17 magazine in a G19 or a G26 and a G19 magazine in a G26. There are +2 magazine floorplates that add an additional 2 rounds per magazine but they extend out of the magazine well somewhat.

I prefer the G19.

To me it balances better, feels better in the hand (the grip feels different than the G17), and shoots just as well if not better for me than the G17.

The only reason to go with the G17 is for the higher capacity of the standard G17 magazines (yes you can put G17 magazines into a G19 but what is the point if you want concealability).

For me I'd rather have a gun that feels and shoots better for my hands than worry about capacity.

YMMV ... some shooters prefer the G17 grip ...

The 17 and 19 are pretty close in size but they feel quite different in the hand to me. Get whichever one feels better to you.

gfpd707 ...just held one today and they want $539. I thought that was reasonable

Last weekend at the Big Town Gun Show in Mesquite AJC Sports had NIB Glock 19's, 17's and others for $435 + tax.

I would definitely prefer the 19 for concealed carry; the grip is enough for me to get all fingers on it, any more is just more difficult to conceal.

Heck man... my daily carry gun is a Glock 26. And the practice version has had at least 10k rounds and not a hickup. The practice piece also doubles as my local IDPA gun.

Yea I have the 17 and 19, but the 26 gets shot way way more often thanks to an AACK .22 unit.

I love my 19, but have never held a 17. When I go for my CHL class I'm going to bring the 19 because it's the most natural to me.
I'd also recommend the LEO deal if you can get it or know anybody that can get it for you. The latter part only applies if that is legal in your area of course. Here is the price lists for the local shop where I am and that's where I got my 19. http://www.durysguns.com/general/leglock
The LEO program also includes three magazines instead of two.

Yes, the Glock 19 in more concealable. The overall height is shorter than that of the G17. The difference may not matter to you, but it matters to me due to my body shape.

For carry I personally would opt for a 19. It is enough smaller particularly in grip to make it easier to conceal IMO. One loses only two rounds of mag capacity and a little sight radius. There is only a couple ounces difference in weight with the 19 being slightly lighter. Carrying your spare mag, the 19 mag will be a little more compact and easier to carry too. To me the G19 is just the right size and is still easy to shoot well and to run the gun under stress. If I were to have only one Glock (in stock configuration) it would likely be a G19.

Do you want it stock or will you modify it?

If you are going to be CC it, and do not want to modify it then the 19.

If you are going to modify it, then maybe the 17.

Why would you modify it? Numerous people do not like the grip of the glocks. Some people do not like the backstrap, others don't like the gap between the finger grooves. others shoot 1k rnds a time and do not like the rough texture under the trigger guard. others don't like the non-stippled finish. The only way to know if you want to change any of these things is to shoot it a couple hundred times.

If you are going to modify the grip, then you should give some serious thought to cutting down the grip of a 17 to the length of a 19. This way you have a g17 balance and sight radius, but the concealability of a 19. Also, if for some reason you cannot have a 19 (i.e. department regulation) then this might be the solution.

My daily carry is a 26 with CT grips and +2 mag extensions. Gives me good round count ( 12 +1 ) and a very concealable gun . I've carried my 19 cc and it is easily concealed as well

I have both and prefer the 17 for general use and carry. With the slight difference in size between the two, I dont see the point with the 19, and losing the two extra rounds and the increased velocity that you get with the extra half inch of barrel length the 17 offers.

The grips on the newer 19's are a big improvement over the older models. The older guns with the notch in the front of the grip like the current 17's were uncomfortable and annoying.

The only real difference is that the Glock 19 has less space for your middle finger than the Glock 17. Count the rows of ridges inbetween the finger grooves....

Buy whichever fits.

Can you guess what one I prefer?....

Yep...the Glock 19 is IMHO the best all around Glock. Small and light enough to Conceal large enough to carry extra rounds.

I prefer carrying my 26 these days but teh Glcok 19 is my favorite.

My next glock will be a 17 that I plan to modify. I'd like to do a grip reduction, a chop, 360 degree stippling and stippled frame flats with a rounded trigger guard and undercut the trigger guard. Although I am toying with the idea of chopping it to a 26 grip :what:.
