Has anyone ever seen a 17 that wouldnt run out of the box? Is this the most reliable glock? Maybe the most reliable auto in existence?

Yes, bought a NIB G17 2nd gen... Would not go more than two rounds without a malfunction (PDX1's). I didn't even finish the box of ammo and returned it for a full refund.
Was not a happy camper..

I've seen several G17s that didn't make it through the first magazine. I don't know if it was the shooter or the gun as I wasn't able to go check...my responsibility was the other end of the firing line. Most of these were the Gen1 and Gen2 guns. It is much more uncommon to see a G19 go down.

A more common sight is to see a G22 not always functioning at 100%. This got better with the Gen3 and made a huge improvement is the Gen4

My experience as to the most reliable Glock is the G19 or the G30

The one I mentioned, either the fame or slide was out of spec (?)... There was a seriously bad "drag" almost immediately out of battery and when returning. I had 3 mags and have been shooting for decades so it wasn't me or cheap ammo. The only other gun I had malfunction that badly was a Jennings 25 back in the 80's.

It is what it is... I know they make good guns, I just ended up with a paperweight.

If they ever come up with a G19 single stack Im all in. Until that day comes Ill be content swapping/shooting my friends Glocks. :)

I personally haven't seen one that did not run, but actually that doesn't mean much.

Is this the most reliable glock?
I've heard some say so. They also say the same of the 19. There seems to be divergences on which Generations are most reliable and which calibers in those generations.

Maybe the most reliable auto in existence?
I wouldn't go that far. The Hi-Power in 9mm has probably sat in that throne for awhile, if there is such a throne. The M9 also has a good rep for reliability.

I don't know why a person would want to label the G17 "The most reliable auto in existence", sounds more like ad copy that a statement of fact. I don't think the gun needs that embellishment.

Some Glocks do tend to have a problem with limp wristing. Both the 17 and 19 are excellent and reliable guns in general. You can have one and be satisfied you have a good reliable gun.

MY G17 had issues with the first 200 rounds I put through it - hand loads using unfired brass. The gun would lock up when fired, once or twice a mag and I would have to hammer the slide open.
Since then I've only ever encountered gun related malfunctions twice - once after 1500 rounds of dirty reloads, shooting a match in a rainstorm. The carbon, water and oil made a sludge that overcame the guns ability to cycle.
The other occasion I had chemically cleaned it, removing every trace of oil. Again it did not cycle when fired.
Apart from that I've had 20,000 plus rounds of uneventful shooting in the last ten years.
My Beretta 92FS has never failed to cycle in around 5000 rounds in the last 8 years, but I have had tumbling rounds / heavy leading with some hand loads. So I stick to jacketed ammo with it.

I currently own a Gen2 17, Gen3 19, Gen4 19, Gen2 20, Gen3 22, Gen3 23, Gen3 26, and Gen3 27. The 23 was bought in 1993 and it simply didn't run at all; Glock completely replaced it that same year at zero cost to me.

The replacement 23, as well as as all other models, ran flawlessly "out of the box". I think you'll find that a fairly common thing as long as the shooter does his part.

I read about a couple groups of glocks that law enforcement agencies had trouble with. I think they ended up getting the entire lot replaced because of malfunctions. This was a group of 40's, and I think one group of 17's.

They are very good, but are not perfect every time.

Bought a NIB G17 back in 1992, I have shot thousands of rounds through it
and it always has functioned and never has given me any prob's. I have a few 9's to choose from in the safe and I've bought/sold a few since 1992, but I've always kept my G17. I hope to get a G30SF soon....

A few THOUSAND

I have seen a few thousand Glocks [ was LEO ] and they all ran better than the shooter could shoot.

I have not yet seen a Glock fail, yea I know that all tools can and eventually fail.

But I have not seen it happen yet and I base my CCW on that FACT.

At present I own 6.

2 are 9 MM [ 17 & 19 ] and both run all the time perfectly.

It's the most reliable semi auto I've owned (0 failures of any kind) and its been the most reliable that I've observed in classes (though that may be a testimony to others poor upkeep of their guns).

I have yet to experience Glock's "ironclad" reliability firsthand. I have normal tested Glock 17, 22, 23, 30, 36 and even got to play with an 18 once. And stress tested all the same models except the 18. All had feeding problems, extraction problems, magazine problems etc.

Reliable?

I've had a G17 for like 17 years and I have only had 2 malfunctions, 1. was my very young at the time daughter shooting it FTF limp wrist, and 2. a round of 9mm that had its case bent or deformed causing a FTF. Just a fluke. No fault of my pistol. 10,000 rds min. in all those years. Amazing pistol really. IMHO.

Out of the 10-12 Glock 17s (Gen 2 , 3 , and 4) that I have had over the years , I havent had a serious issue with any of them.

I currently have one G17, an OD Gen3. It has close to 15,000 rounds through it. The only problem it has is a brass to the face issue. Its not a big deal to me because it doesnt do it that often. I probably have a few parts that can fix it, just havent gotten around to it. Been carrying my G19s rather religiously here lately....so my G17 has took the back seat.

Thats just my experience.

Tipoc... while I agree that the most reliable is a reach, Hi Powers have been quite the opposite for me. Both of my 1990-2004 Hi Powers were stove pipe queens.

I have a 3rd generaation G-17 which I purchased new and has been flawless in the reliability department. I have seen several shooters who have experienced feeding/ejection issues with 4th generation G-19's.

Yep, saw that about 9:30 this morning while qualifying a class of CWP students. The first round fired and ejected but the second round got all mangled up trying to feed. Tap, Rack had no effect, had to drop the mag and rack and tilt and shake and rack and shake.....I was about to summon a tank or bulldozer to drive over it but it finally dropped out all mangled up. We replaced that round (good thing I suggested everyone bring spare ammo) and the next 49 ran just fine. Perfection at it's finest.
