I'm looking at getting the 50 GI conversion kit for Glock 20/21, but I don't have the Glock to begin with. I have a conventional caliber handgun already, and want a .50 that isn't as big as .50 AE or .500 S&W. The way I see it, whether it's metal or poly I'm not too concerned (would prefer poly), but it would probably be cheaper to get just the frame than it would be to buy a G21 and then let the .45 slide and barrel just sit there.

look for a frame on gunbroker OR I know there are some aftermarket frames out there such as the Lone Wolf timberwolf frame. and of course the CCF raceframe. Not sure if they are cost effective for your project but might be worth looking into. Also seems like you could find a used glock that had a ton of slide wear and that might bring the price down.

Problem is, neither the CCF or Timberwolf appear to be built for the 20/21 frame. I'll look on Gunbroker when I start this project.

Yeah, that's why I asked the question. I'd seen from other posts that CCF made metal frames, but then looked and they didn't have a 20/21. Hadn't heard of Timberwolf, but sure enough - same thing.

I think you should buy a complete Glock G21. I doubt you will save any money finding just a frame, and you'll always be able to swap back & shoot .45ACP if you feel like it. If you ever get tired of your "toy", you will get more money if you sell the G21 complete and the .50GI kit separately than if you tried to sell a complete Glock .50GI gun.
