Hows it going i am looking for a ccw pistol and i narrowed it down to a glock 23 and a steyr ma1 I need your help with the decision, i am looking for reliability and accuracy this pistol will defend the lives of my family and myself so i would appreciate the info. thank you

I love they Steyr pistols... and the g23. My choice would be that if this is your first and only handgun purchase for awhile go with the Glock if you like it. It is more expensive up front, but the accessories are cheaper, with some research you can work on it yourself if something goes wrong and if it does break, rare, ship it to Glock in Smyrna,Ga. The Steyr Co. is no longer importing the Ma1 and support might be hard to find.

I had experience with two different Steyr pistols belong to my friends.
While one of them run perfectly, except for reliably igniting the hard primed submachinegun ammo, the other one continuously fail to extract in every two or three magazines.

Other than these issues they are one of the most comfortable pistols in the hand, with a fairly short trigger pull and reset.

I would go with the Glock 23. It is what I carry on and off duty. It is reliable, accurate, and just about "bullet proof." Gear is VERY plentiful for the the Glock. Liability wise you are better off with the Glock.

Q: "Why did you pick the Glock?"

A: "I figured if it was good enough for 3/4 of Law enforcement it was good enough for me."

thanks for the info i have been researching alot on this and i think i will be going with the glock 23. the reliability of glock is phenominal and you cant go wrong with them from what i have read. alot of problem are arising with the ma1 line of steyr. I handled one at the shop the other day and i love the way the feel but i just cant trust em for it being my only carry pistol.

the steyr can be a fine pistol, although it tends to be more prone to problems or outright lemmons. There seems to be a lot of problems with their magazines, if you go go steyr club you can find some stickys on the specific problem.

I agree with those that say shoot both of them and then decide which is best for you.

Easy to do, also read numerous articles about the weapons, go to google.

Put in each name, read and read some more.:uhoh:

As posted above, http://www.steyrclub.com has loads of info on these " problems " and offers easy fixes for them.

Keep in mind that the Steyr pistols are a relatively new design (designed by a long-term protégé of Gaston Glock) and as with all new designs, there are a few quirks (Early gen glocks have their quirks, too).

im pretty sure im going with the g23 on one of the post on steyrclub one of the members had a problem with his pistol and one of the replies was "if you want ak reliability out of a pistol get the ak of the pistols it rhymes with block" if a steyr owner says get a glock then i sure dont want a steyr as my main ccw. Once again thanks for the info full of good thought as always

It wouldn't be wise to make the decision from what one owner has said. There is a reason why the majority of glock owners who own styers perfer the latter like myself. From what I can tell the steyr is made stronger and wiser, and they finally created a sight system that actually makes some sense. I never understood the three dot concept. It feels better. As far as accessories go, they now distribute trijicon night sights and metal guide rods(honestly what else would you put on it?) . Holsters are not an issue anymore either.

If you really think the glocks worth it than get it. I also have pictures comparing my G19 with my M9A1 if you're interested.

I held both pistols today at the gunshop i do like the steyr better i think it is more comfortable i like the sites and the price is right. what i dont like is that there are not very many around but there is a large list of malfunctions for both the 40 and the 9 on steyrclub.com, it just seemed there were alot of dissapointed people on there. i understand that you can send it back to sai if need be but that just dont give me a warm and fuzzy in the old reliability area. If there is a nuclear war i want a pistol to go along with the cockroaches my jeep and my ak also my mother inlaw cause that is the only thing thats gonna be left. Thank you for your opinion im going to look more into it.

Time stamps are revealing. If you're reading about things that were spoken of years ago, they have probably been resolved by now.

Steyr USA is supposedly very friendly and it is reportedly easy to get any 'problems' fixed.

Check it out im not bad mouthing steyr i think it is an awesome gun but those malfunctions are from today to a couple of months ago, also problems with it being finicky with ammo. I think that maybe in a couple of years when they worked out there problems it will be a great peice to depend you and the lives of your family on until then i think a glock is in order. I want to send my ccw away for a week or two for it to get repaired, when i can spend a little more money and get somthing that is tried and true, thank you for your help

I only know about the GLOCK. The G23 is butt ugly utility gun but it works great, if it fits your hand go for it. Only had one malfunction with mine due to a long OAL reloaded round and now have 1,875 rounds thru it.

... and it is totally beyond the realm of possibility that CDNN or whoever sent that poster a brand new gun that had been sitting in the warehouse for years?

You may want to check the extractor if you buy one to see if it is the old style or the new style. Steyr is supposed to be doing retroactive extractor upgrades. The easiest way would probably be to call steyr usa and tell them your serial #.

im looking into the extractor thing as we speak i might go with the steyr if that extractor is the new one. I talked to steyr america they seem to be a good group of guys but if there is a problem with it you do have to send it to them on your own dime so im trying to justify spending money on shipping instead of a glock
