I have been thinking of buying a Glock 29 or 30. I noticed that almost all of them seem to be third gens, with finger groves. But some have the rail and some do not. Is this a custom feature or did Glock add these later in production on third gen 29s and 30s?

I think there were 2nd gen 29's and 30's, so yes, the rail was a 3rd gen addition. I'm not sure the 29 and 30 were around when the Glocks were all 1st generation.

I'm sure that 29s and 30s were not around for a 1st gen iteration. Pretty sure that the rail was added to 3rd gen after a certain date.

Mine has no rail. but has finger grooves it is about 15 years old.

All 3rd and 4th gen 29's and 30's have the rail.

Authoritative-sounding, all right, but, I believe, patently fallacious. (But then, I'm sober; not inebriated.) ;)

2.5 gens did not have the rail, 3rd gens do, as do 4th gens. Feel free to call and ask Glock, they'll tell you the same thing.

And good job on the inebriated jab, I'm sure you really racked your brain for that one.

Just following your lead! I'm not interested enough in the question to waste a nanosecond of my life calling Glock. ;)

Why the attitude? Seriously, are you just trying to be a troll, or what?

I have an early G30 that has been a top notch weapon. Call it with great affection "Old Ugly". The early G30's are often referred to as GEN 2.5's because they did not have rails. But did have finger grooves.

I like mine, but would sell it now and get the "S". Just for the printing. The fat grip happens to work for my large hands, when many don't care for it.
http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1469517- This explains it best. I went through this when someone insisted that it was a gen 1, "not", it basically says a 2.5 and a 3 are the same gun, and referring to it as either is correct.

No attitude, just a vastly different sense of humor, apparently, I absolutely intended the "inebriated/sober" post to be a humorous takeoff on your user name.

And, I really don't have enough interest in the subject of what gen featured the rail to do any further investigating. I was wrong. I stand corrected.

I didn't mean to start a ruckus, ended up buying a 20 anyway, the grip was just too short on that 29, and similar enough in weight.
