As author & special forces veteran John Plaster points out Studies & Observations Group was a "cover".
Many of SOG's actions & locations were top secret. The unit's formal name was Special Operations Group.
Also unlike a lot of Hollywood action films & TV shows, SOG ended all missions & activity in 1973. They weren't fighting or doing missions all the way to 1975.

PS: the CIA used the label OSA or Office of Special Advisor. ;)

Yes it was a cover, but that was their name. Changed to STD in 1972. Were you there? Have you spoken with actual SOG personnel? See my PM.

Then vs now. In WWII, soldiers were shipped firearms in the mail from friends or family to kill the Nazi/Jap heathens. Something that would never be allowed now. With how much the military likes to micro-manage rank and file soldiers, I am surprised we are allowed to bring our own knives overseas.

Indeed.
It seems every urban shooting and most rural combat actions are now treated as crime scene investigations involving two warring gangs,,,
