Glock Gen 3 or Gen 4?

The SEALs just adopted the Gen 3 over the Gen 4.

That should tell you everything you need to know right there.

Most folks picking a .40S&W Glock would pick a Gen 4 model. The entire reason for the Gen 4 guns is to fix problems with the Gen 3 guns in .40S&W.

If you're picking a 9mm Glock, pick whichever Gen you like, but if it's in .40S&W, the Gen 4 gun is the one to choose.

I have several Glocks and have bought and sold more. For my money the Gen 3 and earlier guns feel more solid and have better triggers; the Gen 4 triggers have a mushiness (to me anyway) which is subtle but unmistakeable.

It's amazing what a 3.5 connector and NY-1 trigger spring can do for making "Perfection" pretty darned sweet.

I have both. Today, I would only buy a Gen 4, however I will not sell my Gen 3's to support the purchase of a Gen 4.

Gen4. More grip, modular back straps, larger easier to hit mag release that still never activates accidentally

Are you talking about the conversion barrel with 6 ports in it? I don't see a normal one. Lone Wolf Website says this:

PLEASE NOTE: Using this barrel in a Generation 4 Glock may cause malfunctions while using the standard Glock recoil spring assembly. For best results, install a 9mm Glock recoil spring found here: Glock OEM Recoil Assembly , or for even more versatility, use our Gen4 guide rod adapter with our Gen3 guide rods found here: Lone Wolf Adaptors and Guide Rods .

I much prefer the early gen3's (pre 2010) because they still had the genuine Tenifer metal treatment and glossy black (Teflon-looking) finish that was famously resilient. The newer nitriding treatment (gas applied rather than liquid immersion) is claimed to be basically the same thing, but it ain't, and it has yielded a much lower quality finish (there's no shortage of corroborating onfo). I've had had all the gens but gen2, and I'll take an early gen 3 over all of them (though I would'nt mind a clean gen2 G19, but they seem to disappear quickly).

I like older Gen3's and any Gen2 as well. I have a Gen4 G19 and use the medium back strap which happens to be the same dimensions as the Gen3 G19. The rough texture does nothing for me especially with a tee shirt and the gun riding next to bare skin.

On the Gen 4 (Mine is G19), I like:
Grip with no backtraps feels better than Gen 3
Magazine release makes it easier to reload
The bumps for the finger grooves are less pronounced and aid in gripping
I found it to be more accurate for me, possibly because I grip it better

On the Gen 3 (G19), I like:
The texture. The Gen 4 texture is too aggressive and I don't like it against the skin when wearing it IWB.
The single recoil spring setup makes it more forgiving. On my IDPA 9mm handloads, the empties eject more positively than with the Gen 4 with the dual recoil springs. My IDPA loads sometimes dribble out of the Gen 4.

Even I have a Gen 3 G23 and I''m scratching my head as to why this matters? One thing I do know--the Gen 3 is cheaper than the Gen 4. So, maybe it's completely pragmatic the SEALS chose the cheaper of the two?

Anyhow, I was at Cabelas a few months ago and they had a hell of a good deal. They had a G2 (that's right a G2 with no finger grooves) with a laser for $399. Unfortunately, I didn't have the funds to buy that bad boy, and, I've already invested a lot of $ in my G3 G23 (that I've got a 9mm barrel I can swap into, I call it my G2319). That was a damn good deal!

Maybe they just don't want to have to keep track of ten billion different modular backstrap pieces? Could be a reason to pick Gen3 over Gen4 for this kind of thing, I bet.

I don't know anything about it because I don't care, did Glock submit both gens or just the third?

I have a Gen4 and really like it. However it is the first Glock I have ever owned so I can't compare it with earlier models. I personally like the grips.

The Gen4 setup on my G-21 let me experiment with the large beavertail backstrap and I think that made this gun more shootable for me.

I would say that depends entirely on several things. How well does the Gen 3 fit your hand. Are you left handed. Do you like the magazine release on the Gen 4. The extra magazine I think you pay for with the higher price.

I also agree on the older Gen 3s. The last one I bought several years ago I made sure the gun was older.

I'm not a fan of the generation 4 grip texture. I totally dislike it. I have a gen 4 26 I'm going to try to trade locally for a 3 gen 26.

My 27 is a gen 3 and feels more solid than my 26 mentioned above. My other Glocks are 3rd gen except for the 42 .380.
